Need another reason to hate the RIAA?

Just because of this, I'm going to go illegally download every album on the Billboard top ten, and then delete them all, and repeat the process 10 or so times.

Record companies make money from that too, iTunes buys the rights to sell their songs from the labels just like anyone else.

well it wont be too long until they buy it directly from the artists.

itunes and, to a lesser extent, snocap will be the way music is sold in the future.

It's called itunes.

Record Companies are obsolete.

Itunes won't pay your touring support.
You make your money hittin the road...but hitting the road is really expensive, so you need help if you want to play outside your area code.

They don't have to. An independent artist can add their songs to Itunes.

I've heard of independent bands touring by themselves at small time venues. I'm biased anyway, a someone who's been described as "Indie" I woudln't particularly fret if music went predominantly local and internet. Whether or not touring is expensive, record companies are going to start losing out fast. So some alternative means will have to come up.

Let's put it this way. If I had 40 million dollars to my name and you were asking if I needed another million...

..."Well, I don't need another million, but I'll certainly take it."

I fully agree that the future should be artists selling their music directly to consumers, or at least without such a bloated cartel of rights holders getting in the way.

The problem is that the bloated cartel is fantastically wealthy, deeply entrenched and carries way to much influence. Decreasing their involvement will be difficult if not impossible IMHO.

Sure, if your band is very small, and you never play more than 3 hours away. Your profit margin performing those small time venues is razor thin, and when you only play a few cities (which is all you can do, with travel being very expensive), you saturate yourself...you really can't make a living doing it. You need to travel all over, and that requires somebody else to help foot the bill.

My friends, no need to hate on a more successful pirate than yourself. Green with envy is not a good color scheme for a pirate.
