Need help - nearly no resources

Hi! This is first post from me so hi to everyone

Ok so I'm playing Civ3 Complete edition from few days and I have a problem. I use huge map, archipelago, 60% water. With tech is ok, I get ahead from AI something like 3-4 tech's. All ok. I move to industrial era and then game goes dead. Why? Becouse on huge map I see only 2 (literaly) 2 icons of coal. My difficulty settings are the lowest (Chieftain?) So can someone help me. What to do? Each game is like this. Nearly NO resources. When I chose game I leave seed on 0 as it is normaly.

Any help? My version is 1.22 if this would help.

The abundance of strategic and luxury resources are connected to the amount of civilizations in the game, so I guess you aren't playing with many civs? The obvious thing is to conquer the coal from the AI, since trading is probably not an option.

You likely know this already, but just in case: In the menu you can choose to remove cities from the view. It might be that there is coal under cities that you haven't spotted.

I play with 7+1 civ's so there is 8 civ's on map. Need more civs then?

I think Yoda Power has nailed it. How many civs are in the game with you? You can also hit "Ctrl+Shift+M" to get the "clean map" view.

ETA: Cross-posted. Tee it up with 7+1 on a standard map (rather than huge) or a full slate on a huge map, and I think you'll see more resources.

I have done a fair amount of testing for strategic and luxury resources, and the number of strategic resources is based on the number of civilizations in the game, and about 95% of the time, the number is plus or minus 1 of the number of civilizations in the game, if it is not exactly that number. If you are playing with 8 civilizations, there will very likely be only 7-9 of each strategic resource.

Also, it has been determined that the AI knows where resources are located in advance of their discovery, and has this distressing tendency to plant a city on the tile well in advance of the resource appearing. Therefore, doing a Clear Map check is definitely in order.

I have generated in the Editor a fair number of archipelagos, as I play on those and continents exclusively. I am not a fan of Pangaea at all. In the course of that, I have come up with maps that have islands with maybe 10 to 12 tiles have 2 or 3 strategic resources while a much larger landmass of several hundred tiles has none whatsoever. Resource placement can be very odd.
