To keep it quick: playing VP with a few other VP-centric mods, havin a great lil marathon, 360 turns in and I'm constantly backing out & tuning the DifficultyMod.xml, clearing the Cache folder & getting back into it whilst playing.

This time, however, I saved, quit, changed a value in the .xml, cleared cache, and now every time I select my savefile and load it, the cursor starts doin it's 'spinning globe' and the little window pops up reading 'Configuring game data' or whatever.

And then after 20 seconds of that it crashes straight to desktop with no error message.

I can safely start a new game. I tried loading all the old autosaves. Obviously something is now incompatible, but I can't conceive what, because I literally changed 1 value.

Is there a chance I can recover this save?

I know it sounds obvious but have you tried reverting the changes you made and see if it loads then?

Haha... yeah, I did! Which is why I'm so confused!

Tuning the DifficultyMod.xml during a game ? That's what you mean?
If so, I believe it's exactly what to do to get CTD !

I know how stupid it sounds! But honestly, I really did make sure it wouldn't crash my game by changing things around in the beginning of the game, and then I played on when it didn't! Aw ****.

@Soupy Delicious , a very wild guesswork:
1) Delete cache
2) Revert to the previous values
3) Start a completely new game (which should create a new cache with values from the state when the game was still working for you)
4) Load a save
5) Pray

But yeah, you were kinda asking for trouble :)

Y'know, that sounds pretty legit. I'll give it a try!

Edit: Haha... didn't work. Most likely because I don't know what I changed which messed it up. I mean, I thought I did but perhaps I'd also changed something else.

It's just weird because I'd been doing exactly that, at least 5 times during the game and it was fine! Anyway, thanks for the input friend :D

in my experience, you'll have better luck with mid-game changes if you make a modpack first, and edit those files as you play rather than the cache directly... that said I'm not sure the common method of making one is working with recent VP versions

Interesting. Good to know. And yeah, modpacks weren't working when I last tried ;(
