My mom got Norton Antivirus Professional 2004 and Norton Internet Securtiy 2004, for free after rebates. The Antivirus comes with two licenses; the NIS only has one. So that's 3 licenses. But at our house, we have four computers: mom, dad, sister, and me. I installed the NIS on my sister's and the Antivirus on my mom's. That leave one license left for either my dad's or my computer. Whose computer should I install it on? Should I ask my mom to buy another Antivirus product? (I saw a special for Antivirus for free after rebates).

Normally I wouldn't ask about it, but Symantec forces you to active the product, and I'm not going to risk getting caught...

I don't think there'd a problem. I think I've been able to install NIS (2001 IIRC) on several different computers at the same time, and it has worked with MS Office too. I don't know how legal it is though, but it seems to work.

Only connect computers that are connected to the internet. If you have a network and use internet connection sharing, then I'd go for the gateway PC first, and make sure that you don't open e-mail attachments on the other PCs.

All four are hooked up to the Internet, and we use a router to connect through the Internet...so there's danger for everyone.

Symantec now forces you to activate. 2004 is the first year that Symantec is rolling out activation safeguards. I know with Microsoft you can activate more than once - my mom installed Office 2000 on the office server and at home. But I don't know whether to take the risk that Symantec, another company, will actually check and nab whoever ilelgally tries to activate.

Hm... I'd pick some of the PCs you use most often, or your more powerful PCs.... Actually, the ones with the most private/important files would be the best to protect....

As for the other computers, don't leave them entirely unprotected, get AVG! It's really good IMO, and it's free, if you get the Free Edition, which should do well enough for you.

Also, your router should act as a hardware firewall, so that'll help you out a bit.

Are they allowed to do that? I can see it if they don't accept the second activation, but not allowing you to use the program you bought at all sounds extreme. Maybe you could check some faq on their home page, or some more specific forum for this kind of thing.

They will definitley accept two activations - it's a two-license product. But a third activation (if I installed it on a third computer) might get me into trouble.

Alternatively - use ZoneAlarm on one of the systems.

For home use, it's free and very good.
