Nested tooltip implementation (so far)

I was SOO excited to hear in the patch announcement that they had (finally) started implementing nested tooltips. Then I saw the implementation in today's patch. Wow. I know they said it was only the first steps, but seriously requiring the keyboard? I don't know about the rest of you but I never touch the keyboard for Civ after launching it. Can't there be some way to invoke the (otherwise useless) right mouse button when in menus or use a delay-click like most other games?. I haven't checked yet but wonder how this will work in practice on Steam Deck and consoles.

Expanding terms like "Settlement" but not, say, "Wonder" or "Resource" makes very little sense. I have yet to see a nested term that would be useful to anything other than someone during their first play-through.

Direct, nested, links to the Civilopedia are desperately needed throughout the game and have been since launch. I'm hoping this is just a dry run and that Firaxis takes a hard look at how this is implemented in future patches.

In any event, kudos to them for trying to fix what is broken. They've made great headway on game mechanics and hope their efforts to improve the UI continue.

From the patch notes:

This feature is something we’re still actively working on, but we want to get the first iteration of it into your hands right away so you can let us know how it feels.

For example, we’re experimenting with automatically locking a tooltip if it’s been open for a few seconds, and letting players configure that timing.

Thanks - missed that in the announcement yesterday. Looking forward to the full implementation!

I also don't want to press a key to keep the tooltip open, so I'm looking forward to other options. A configurable hover delay would be optimal. Right click is also OK. A small button to "open this topic in Civilopedia" would be helpful.

They want to make it console friendly, which means, controller friendly. Thats why it is designed as it is
Makes sense for something available on a bunch of platforms. I want them to add a hover option, but I also prefer the control of an immediate keypress without having to move my mouse. And I play on the PC.

Yeah, that's a rather interesting solution. And to borrow a phrase from someone somewhere down under, I can't decide if that's a great implementation or a sh*t implementation, it's just another implementation happening on the planet, I suppose

I think the new tooltips are a bit bloated, they overlay huge parts of the tech and civic trees, for example. My impression is that they want to cram as much info as possible in those tooltips, but I feel this is a bit over the top now.

In my opinion a better solution would be to keep the tooltips more minimalistic and link to the civilopedia for the details instead. Or maybe have a more condensed initial tooltip, which expands into more details when the "inspect" key is pressed. This expanded view could then also include links to the civilopedia, for the most in-depth info and cross-reference to other aspects.

They put a lot of effort into the civiliopedia. But I feel that it is much less accessible than it was in previous civ games, since there are almost no direct links to the civiliopedia.

And while we are at the subject of the Civilopedia - how about the re-establishment of quicklinks within the Civilopedia itself?
How often do I find myself opening the entry of some civilization only to click onto the thumbnail of some building or unit ... for nothing to happen? The user-friendliness of Civ6's Civilopedia does hit painfully in comparison, when noticing the absence of such vital features.
Or how about the 'emptiness' (and by that = uselessness) of many entries, especially in regard to civics and technologies? What I am presented with, when opening their entries, is their historical fluff-text, but no mention of their actual ingame effects ... I really want this fixed :(
When I first started playing Civilization 6, the game's attempt to methodically explain itself by providing the necessary information in an intuitive manner really helped me console myself with that game's complexity.
This effort is felt much less in Civ7. Which is a pity. Especially for newer players and those with a limited time budget.

I was disappointed with the civilopedia. There's no doubt a lot of work went into it, but I mean even civ 3 had links between articles and actual information presented. When I was learning the game it was so annoying to search the civilopedia for a concept just to have to get my phone out and learn about it online.

I mean there are basic design fails like not having the search box automatically focused so you can start typing without clicking.

100 percent agree on the Civlopedia. This reminds me of another pet peeve - the Wonder cinematics (which are otherwise gorgeous) have no description of what the Wonder does in terms of gameplay. There used to be an excellent mod that added this but it stopped working many patches back.

Doesn't building the Wonder show this? By the time you've built it, presumably you know what you wanted out of it?

As in VI, I prefer that the animation is a purely aesthetic thing, personally.

True, but that is sometimes 20 turns earlier. You can also see the info by clicking through the cinematic and tootipping over the wonder on the map. But unlike almiost all other game cutscenes I find myself letting these play out - I hate to have to skpi it just to remember why I picked it in the first place.

Do you need to remember why you picked it, while the cutscene is playing?

I mean I guess you do, sorry! It's just a bit surprising to me. I like screenshotting the Wonder cinematic, and including stats in there for me would compromise that a bit.

It won't work for everyone, given hardware constraints, but if you have a gaming mouse with extra buttons, I'd recommend changing the default "inspect" key to use one of those buttons. That way you can still use the tooltips exclusively with the mouse without overwriting the existing functionality for right clicking.

I've got RSI so try to use the mouse as little as possible so appreciate the keyboard commands!!
