King of the Beers
Here are my thoughts on the new AI agression levels. I am playing a large continents Monarch game. I am England, the aggression setting is at max. The other guys on my continent are france, germany and the netherlands. I have played up until Magnetism. I am trying to remain peaceful, while building up a large economic and scientific base. That is working except the ai makes so many units that they dont have any money left over to give me in exchange for techs. This was disappointing. Except for one or two civs, everyone was broke and way behind me on tech. I was using a Monarchy gov and was maintaining the the tech lead.
By about 1000AD I was able to discover all of the main land masses using a single Curragh. Thats how I knew everyone was broke.
This setting almost feels like an 'always war' game. The ai doesnt really fight any better, but they sure do make more units. They send tons of them at you. I faced mostly archers, longbows and knights. Archers and longbows make me nervous, I avoid them unless I have overwhelming numbers. I have been at war with either france and netherlands with germany as my ally or at war with germany as france as my ally for almost the entire game.
I would say this setting slows down the tech pace quite a bit. I ended up getting quite a few great leaders because I killed so many enemy troops. I used armies a bit, they get an extra movement point, which is nice. Knight armies can move 3 and crusader armies can move 2. Its about 1200AD and I have three armies in the field, enough for a pentagon.
I built the Templar Wonder. The crusaders are really nice. Five attack can defeat anything including musketmen. Trebuchets are nice too, they hit city defender fairly well.
I would recommend increasing ai aggression if you want to fight more, but not if you want a peaceful game. If you can survive, you will end up getting more leaders. This would be a good setting while playing a civ like Rome, Japan, Germany or China.
