Introducing the Exploration Age civ, Mongolia!

In the steppe of Mongolia, Temüjin – who would become Genghis Khan – united feuding clans and led them across the known world. The Mongols used not only their famed archers, but also debuted gunpowder on the battlefield. Internally, the empire was a tolerant state, permitting freedom of religion, safe roads, and a passport system. But with the great Khan’s passing, the Mongol horde splintered.

The Ortöö would be nuts under the old system with builders (slap one down as soon as you conquer a city), but I assume it will take longer with the build-queue approach (or maybe not?). It seems like you can likely chain them and get your calvary moving from the inside of your empire to the edges quickly.

A UI that refreshes movement plus a UU that heals on kills seems like it could get wild.

Actually, does the Ortöö refresh attacks as well, or just movement?

+4 settlement limit - that’s insane. We’ve got a top-tier conquering civ here (and, btw, more interesting to play than the others of its type revealed so far).

Also, I love the bonus of its associated wonder.

Descriptions!
  • Bokh (Ability) - Бөх [bökh] - a Mongol style of folk wrestling; literally translates as "reliable, tenacious; firmness"
  • Ulus (Civic) - улс [uls, modern Mongolian]; [ulus; Classical Mongolian] - lit. "state; people; nation"; a nation or tribe among Turkic and Mongol peoples
  • Four Hounds (Civic) - four advisors/generals to Genghis Khan: Subutai, Jebe, Jelme, Khubilai Noyon, forming part of his inner council
  • Yassa (Civic) - Их Засаг [Ikh Zasag] - the oral law code of the Mongols and the Mongol Empire.
  • Gerege (Tradition) - Гэрэгэ [Gerege, Middle Mongolian] - "a tablet carried by Mongol officials and envoys to signify certain privileges and authority"
  • Baghatur (Tradition) - ᠪᠠᠭᠠᠲᠦᠷ [Baγatur] - a Turkic and Mongolian honorific akin to a knight; also found use in India in later periods
  • Jarlig (Tradition) - Зарлиг [Zarlig] - a legal document in the Mongol Empire; still the modern Mongolian term for an official edict
  • Ortöö (Infrastructure) - Өртөө [Örtöö] - "checkpoint, station"; a postal and messenger system in the Mongol empire, also known as the Yam
  • Noyan (Civilian) - ноён [noyon] - a prince; "civil-military leaders of noble ancestry" responsible for 1000-10,000 households/soldiers
  • Keshig (Military) - Хишигтэн [Khishigten] - "favored; blessed" - the imperial guard and shock troops for Mongol royalty

I'm a little confused by the unique ability:

The phrasing of the bolded part with "but" is throwing me. As written, it seems like Mongolia gets a Settler Production malus every time it conquers a settlement. Is that something that lasts a few turns? Is it a permanent additional percentage for each conquest? Is it a general malus that only gets triggered after conquering 1 settlement?

Or is that wrong, and it has nothing to do with settlement conquest, and Mongolia just always has a Settler Production malus?

I interpreted it as the latter (latest? the last one)

I think it's just a flat penalty. Putting it into the sentence with condition was a mistake.

I think it's a general malus, divorced from the "every time you capture a settlement" qualifier

Hmm...the civilization is leaderless. Does that mean we shouldn't expect Genghis Khan in the base game? The reduced Production towards Settlers might seem as a disadvantage at first, but actually it's clever. Not only it is fitting for a nomadic civilization, but at the same time it will force the player to conquer settlements in order to expand.

In articles, they regretted not including Genghis Khan at launch in Civ5 and Civ6, so now we can expect with great certainty that he will be at launch. :p

I don’t think we’ll see Genghis in the base game. Though it’d be nice to see someone new for Mongolia (besides Kublai).

Edit: I stand corrected  Guess we may see him in a couple days
