So I'll start by saying, I haven't played a complete game of Civ4 for nearly a decade. My old laptop just couldn't handle the game anymore, especially late-stage.
My PC tower hasn't been used in probably 10 years.
Between those two artifacts, there are hundreds of hours of Civ4 marathon games. Countless Stacks of Doom. Hundreds of GP farms. Countless battles and wars, mostly won on my part.
So in an effort of curiosity, I installed a copy of Civ4, BTS, Blue Marble, and BUG Mod (night need to uninstall and reinstall the mod...?).
Firstly, I was curious how the game would run on the newest laptop (gifted from my wife once she got a new one for her work).
Secondly, I wanted to see how the touch screen would interact with the game. (So far, not impressed)
So I set off as the Vikings in Ancient Era on Marathon speed. Fractal map with 5 players.
My first war is to take Germany while they only have 2 cities. I spam axemen and destroy 1 city, and capture Berlin. Bye, bye Germany. No one else on my island/continent.
Monty is 1 tile away on his own island/continent. So I know I have some time before a mass invasion.
There are a few skirmishes with Monty using some galleys to attack Birka directly by sea. I appreciate the free promotions. I target Optic, and circumnavigate the globe for the +1.
Next is Astonomy (galleons) and Mathematics (catapults). Not sure the order.
I've developed Berlin into a military powerhouse with like 50 hammers, 2 Great Generals, Barracks, Stables, Vassalage, and Theocracy, and Heroic Epic.
With 4 Galleons stacked, I send my first wave of Berserkers, Axemen, and a few catapults.
While they pick apart his small army and take a few smaller cities, I crank out another stack. Plenty of Longbowmen and Spearmen to hold the captured cities. Start to build catapults for city seiges (i.e. to more than likely die).
Horse archers and chariots pillage any iron or copper mines. Monty is left with a few Jaguars, Spearman, and Longbowmen. Of course, each seige comes with him whipping his entire population into Longbowmen. So populations are going from 10 or 7 down to 2...
It's kind of drawn out, but I eventually take all the cities and Monty is done.
I've got two whole island to myself, and just Ramses II left. He's on the other side, and isolated so I'm not worried especially with my massive SoD (I just don't have the galleons to invade Ramses yet).
Post-Monty Pax: cities are cranking at full capacity. I've got 2 GP farms, 3 powerhouse military cities, 3 cities nearing 50+ culture per turn with minimal WW. I switch to Pacifism and Caste System. We are both racing towards Liberalism. I even run a deficit to beat him by 4 turns.
Ramses wants open borders. He sends 1 missionary to spread Hinduism.
Finishes the AP.
Vote comes up.
Ramses II wins on Diplomatic Victory...
D'oh!
So I shouldn't have switched civics, or I should have denied open borders.
For the most part, Ramses II and I had good diplomacy (no negative modifiers), but I definitely made a rookie mistake.
I was set for a Domination victory, Space Race, UN (possibly), or Cultural Victory.
Didn't even think about the AP....
