With the holidays coming up, I thought it might be fun to see what new games we are all giving a chance. If it winds up being fun, create a thread for it!

The ones that made the cut for me:

- Ara: History Untold. Of the new history-spanning 4X's, it's the one I paid the least attention to during development, but it seems to have found its feet and a good reception. So, I'll be trying it this winter!
- Old World: Wrath of the Gods. I'm back up to having all the Old World expansions! The dynamic map aspect of it - with shifting ocean lines and varying mountain navigability - sounds particularly interesting to me, even as I might keep just as much of a wary distance from volcanoes as I tended to in Civ III.
- Clanfolk. I've been wanting a new base building game for a while, and the reception to this one seems to be very positive. So, it's off to the Highlands to build a village.

There might be a couple more that I'll pick up in December, we'll see. Memoriapolis and EU5 are on my radar. Played a bit too much EU4 in 2024 and early 2025 though, so I'm ready for more turn-based strategy games. Elemental: Reforged also looks interesting (but I should really play Fallen Enchantress first), and at some point I'm sure I'll want to try Endless Legend II, it's just a question of when.

I got Old World, Endless Legend and Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War, none of which sadly run well on my laptop. I might play them when I get the desktop this semester break, but I'll probably be playing too much of Kenshi.

I did play Endless Legend and Old World last break, I liked the first, not so much the latter. I got the Warhammer game for free, played a little of it on my laptop, very punishing even on the easiest difficulty, my armies just got wiped out every time they ventured away from my capital, what little I played of it was fun, but my laptop's jankiness dissuaded me from giving it more time

So still at early access, I have much fun with Elemental: Reforged - but most fun with CCR, a new Civ 3 mod that will be released in time for Christmas.

I finally did pull the trigger on Transport Fever 2, thanks to Gedemon's endorsement on the Steam Replay thread. So far, I like it. I haven't made it too far in as I am trying out different startup strategies. I haven't even made it to 1900 yet. But I suspect that game will see a fair bit of play time. Those games hold an advantage in that I can leave it running on normal speed and get other things done while I play. Makes it easier to "make time".

EDIT: I got some good time in this weekend. Once you get your feet wet, it isn't hard to make money and thus, the challenge for money is gone. Although, when money isn't the issue, logistics and maintenance are. If you just enjoy the chill environment of the game, it is worth it. I like turning it on, and casually looking for new routes to plan or ways to optimize existing routes. Plus, you get the benefit of adding boats, passenger lines, and planes. It takes a while to route a map completely and it takes some strategizing to do so as the game goes on.
