So I have my Civ4:BTS disc, but my Civ4 vanilla disc has vanished across the ocean I think, and I cannot find it.

Problem is, I just got a new HDD put in with a new OS, and my old civilization install won't run anymore.

Anyone know of a way to fix this or am I just SOL until Civ5 rolls around? :(

Note: I'm not particularly adverse to downloading a copy then installing BTS from disc and patching etc, just constrained by download limits until the end of the month.

If you got a new OS, the registry entries for the game are gone. Technically you could make them again manually ( if you knew what reg entries Civ IV needs , a thing that i don't know as well :p ), but , besides the danger of messing with registry entries, it is far easier to reinstall the game.

Sure, get another copy of the disc and re-install... what's the question? I guess you mean, anyway to fix this for free?

Have you tried to install BTS? I had a damaged Vanilla file at one time (all fixed now) but I was still able to run BTS and warlords. If you have the files on the computer but can't run then the game it might not matter for running BTS.

I've always been able to run it out of the install directory copied to a thumb drive (so I could play at the computer labs where I worked when I was in college). you have to copy the directx drivers into the directory with the game's exe though or it can't find them. If you're getting directx errors, that's probably what your problem is.

If you look in the windows folders on your old hard drive you'll find d3dx9_31.dll, d3dx9_32.dll, d3dx9_31.dll, and d3dx9_31.dll. You only probably need one of these but I copied all of them into the dir with Civilization4.exe and the game plays fine from my thumb drive.
