Ok so my old galley is heading back from it's voyage through Egyptian territory when Cleopatra tells me to move it or else it's war! I say ok, and the ship moves automatically . . . out of her territory, into the middle of the bay, and directly to an undiscovered island! Check it out . . .

Cool, it's the British Isles (with whales.......and fish.........er..and iron........ we do have the cows though).

Good for you, just make sure you don't give your World Map away to any of those freeloading other civs.

I wonder whether Cleo knew about those islands and wanted to give them to you as a Valentine's present.....maybe she fancies you.

. . . and since we're on the subject of Cleopatra :egypt: , she may want to consider taking a course in conflict resolution, or "How to tell someone 'Gimme or I'll send my pikemen to crush you' without causing offense." Notice that she is 'polite' while making her demand . . .

I'm referring to Cleo, not the cow on the island.

What did you tell her? My theory looks right about her liking you as she is smiling as she demands tribute (just like my girlfriend does).

I've never given in to demands from other civs and they generally back down for around 10 or so turns before trying again. By then I've been wise enough to increase my army size and can afford to tell them to get stuffed!

Of course there was that one time that Shaka demanded tribute in the form of a World Map and when I refused he landed about 40 cavalry units near my capital - and Zululand was half way round the world - crafty git!

What did you tell her?

I've made it a policy to just give them what they want unless I'm ready for war or know they are bluffing. There have been too many times when the price of not giving in has been much higher than what they ask for.

make damn sure you start settlers for thoses islands ASAP!

The AI somhow "knows" where they are even if you do not trade world maps!

This is good advice, especially at the begining of a game when your defences might be weak. However, when they demand a territory map I've found that they usually declare war a few turns after you give it to them. Don't give in to a map demand.

When they ask for a map I just counter with a small gift of gold. That of course doesn't seem to work often. :(

It is always a good idea to put a settler on a ship before you send it out, even better a military unit with it. There aren't many islands out there and the AI seems to get there first unless you have the settler handy.

I remember one time telling the Chinese to drop dead when they made one of those demands. Oops!

At the time the Chinese were routing the standard settler/spearman combo through my territory to settle some empty land near a civ I had been pounding on. I seldom garrison my interior cities.

So when I rejected the Chinese demand they promptly declared war and razed on of my empty size 12 cities (with all improvements already built in it.

Stupid human AI

I envy you and your new island :D

Great thread esp. the screenies :)

Indeed it looks a very interesting world map from what I can see...what settings did you use?

This was a 'huge' map, with the default settings for size of continents, age, and wetness. It seems like in the last few games, this continent size selection has resulted in maps like this, with one huge continent with most of the civs on it, and few small continents, or even islands, with just one civ. I think I'd like a little more sea.

Anyways, here is this island in 2007, I settled the best parts of it, but the Egyptians managed to get a foothold, which they later gave me in a peace settlement. Turns out this island was some joice real estate, having both iron and coal, it qualified for the Iron Works, which I built. Ignore those Egyptian tanks, I do hehe. BTW I won a space race victory in this game in 2004 :)
