How about - "special topology maps". Theese are a generalization of the spherical map. Basically, you could play on any shape you whish (2D or 3D). How cool would it be to be able to play on a true 3D map resembling the Eros asteroid or the Deimos satellite?

Would the controls needed for turning, zooming and so on not reduce playability compared to a 2D map?

I think the idea of moon maps and so on is cool, as is the idea of maps allowing travels around the world in NS and WE directions... right now you can only travel around the world from west to east, but not vertically.

Not true. In PTW, and C3C you can turn on Y-Wrapping and scroll from the bottom of the map to the top. Now, this isn't like going over the north poll, but it would be simular to going off the right side of the map and ending up on the left side.

If employed smart, they won't. However, a classic 2D map will no longer be possible (too much distortion).

They are employed in Civ2 CTP. It's called a doghnut (or torroidal) World.
