New NESes, ideas, development, etc

Btw, here's what I'm wondering - Starcraft II is great and all, but I didn't expect you to abandon your Penguin avatar entirely. Can't you make an "Infested Penguin" one?
I had no intentions to forever abandon the penguin avvies. This was just a mysterious zerg creature I found. But that's a good idea. I'll get around to making a new avatar.

I'd love to see something like that :D
I'm torn whether to do a hybrid or an 'infested' (IE: heavily twisted and mutated) one.
The avatar is so grainy too...eww.
Yeah, I had to reduce its quality to get it to upload.

I like the idea of a pirates NES. Would this be based on sid meier’s games?

I haven’t played the 3D version, but I remember ‘pirates gold’ on my friend’s Amiga CD32, definitely one of my favourite games ever. Even though I never scored very high (“most of the crew feels angry with their portion” :( ). And the governor’s daughters were hot! Probably the nicest looking things ever to come out of the CD32 :).

I can imagine it being good NES material, at least in theory. Like maybe the updates would report the news of pirate attacks and events etc, leaving everybody guessing about where everybody else is :).

It's spelled 'Trik', not 'Trikk'.

Nice though. :D

No offence to Trik! I was taking things from random files I had, I was looking at ‘Trikkland’ on the zpnes3 map.

@daft, excellent idea...though I do not own HOI unfortunately, so I personally would be a bit behind :p

Well there’s so many options and stuff that you could send orders for pretty much anything, without needing to know the game mechanics. Anything that cant be done in-game can be done by editing the save (its basically a huge editable text file).

I was thinking there’d be three main types of characters, based on the three kinds of leaders in the game: the researchers (actually whole tech teams, but they can be based around individuals), politicians, and generals. Though these could cross over, so a researcher could have their own personal panzer division which they could order around, and a place in government giving them influence over other decisions in the game, etc.

Only thing im not sure of is which country to play as. Maybe something like Switzerland could be fun. Edited to have heavy industry, and super-units belonging to the ‘generals’ etc. Even with custom country name and flag and everything. Could even join the axis or the commintern. The possibilities are endless

No I have never played sid miers pirates. I will probably base it mainly off of bananalee's concept but add some more land gain oppurtunities. Like allow some people to apply to be governors of a town and employ pirates or freelancers to work for them under the table with a certain loyalty needed from your mother country. Ill post a preview ruleset when Im done with it.

@daft, I think Germany, Britain, or the Soviets would be the best options.

Any interest in me running a second version of NES life?

Should i alter the "cradle" as it were.. or simply let peoples choice carve out a different world?

Yeah... or you could make it a totally different world. Maybe a gas giant. Actually, that would be awesome! But whatever you want is good.

@Azale, maybe a bit too big? I was thiking it would be fun to play as an underdog that becomes an 'overdog', is that a word lol :hmm:

@Abaddon, go for it! I will copy all your innovations :D And if you steal all the players from my version, it gives me an excuse to start yet another NES with more insane ideas.

BTW, if you dont have a better idea for the graphics, maybe something like the flash editor would be good (what i use).

I was going to ask how you did the art, to me it is very integral to the NES.. what program do you use? I rate my msPAINT skills, but they arn't up to drawing what you do.

Don't think i will have many innovations, you struck gold first time ;)

Think i will stick to earth, its easy for everyone to invisage etc.

It is Flash as i stated in my post :p Macromedia Flash Editor 2004 to be exact (trial version, thats kinda 'patched' so that it hasnt expired yet :mischief:)

IMO, Flash makes things look nice with little effort, it adds 'character' i guess. It does smooth lines for you, and the 'gradient fill' gives the illusion of some detail for the creature pics. Otherwise it would just be bad line drawings.

Edit: apparently there are other apps that have similar stuff, Photoimpact 7?

I'll google about unless you know of the original download link?

Oh! China (either one or both), Turkey, Spain, Mexico would be fun for that then :D

@Abaddon, i got Flash in 2004 (and i had cable internet back then, happy memories!). I dont know the link now. Maybe Macromedia have a new trial version of the editor on their homepage?

@Azale, china could be fun. Turkey has very little industrial power in the default 1936 scenario, but that could be edited.

I have an (IMHO) interesting idea for making Diplomacy/Risk games more NES-like by encouraging stories. Basically, the "problem" for these kinds of games is that they are just games, and the only thing the moderator does is to plug peoples' orders into some software. There's no way for the moderator to give bonuses in terms of extra troops or extra attack strength or some such, simply because the game is the way it is. (There is the Edit Mode in jDip though...)

However, since there is actually a moderator who has access to all the orders, there are some chances for rewards. Specifically, it would be possible for a player to write conditional orders:
IF Germany goes A den-swe THEN F nwy-swe ELSE F nwy-nwg
IF Blue Army attacks Congo from East Africa THEN Congo => East Africa (max) ELSE Congo => North Africa.
In other words, writing stories can be rewarded by giving players an intelligence agency of sorts. I'm thinking that moderators can award players Intelligence Points (IPs) for good stories, and that these can then be used to "buy" conditional orders like the ones above.

For Diplomacy, one could also imagine that IPs could be used to buy one extra attack or support strength, a support that could not be cut, a double move or some other such thing that could be fixed by the moderator using Edit Mode. All different things that could be done could possibly cost different amounts of IPs.

Thoughts?

IF Germany goes A den-swe THEN F nwy-swe ELSE F nwy-nwg

Bitter? :p

To respond to the actual content of your post, I think it could be interesting--BUT these additional rules need to be very clearly laid out at the beginning of the game. Non-story writers (or whatever the mechanism you're using for IPs) need to know that they'll be at a disadvantage, no matter how good they are at the core game.

Basically, emphasize that this is a seperate game, not a simple variant.

Well I'm not the biggest fan of random story bonuses in general, so you can imagine how I'd feel about them being implemented in games with an ideally concrete moves and rules set.

And conditional rules just ruin the spirit of diplomacy
