new on the way

Hmmm have you played any of the other Civ games? The manual may help you and reading old threads may also help you. There are several links on the main page which describe parts of the game. The Civilopedia in the game can be useful at times as well, to find out which units are best and what the effects of each wonder are...

1.- built you capital on river ( extra gold+ no need aqueduc)
2.- built road on worked tile+ mine shielded grassland.
3.- built 3 warrior, 2 explore 1 for defense.search for pottery.
4.- after 3 warrior you should be able to built a settler, so you got your second city.
5.- after your second city is built increase science to 80% with the slider ( domestic advisor).
6.- built another warrior for capital city defense and then a granery.
7.- the granery will speed up city growth so you can built more settler. built about 4-5 good city around your capital, one worker per city. built spearman to protect those city. Good spot for city are close to luxuries and ressource.
8.- After the core is built, built temple, wall, , your capital can built a wonder ( pyramid) while you head for litterature. built library.
9.- If you got iron and or horse, built some swordman and or horseman. This provide you a little attacking army. if a nearby a.i. fool around prepare for war.
10.- if no war then built marketplace and change to republic. if you dont have 3+luxuries add 10% lux with the slider.
11.- increase city size as much as you can ( need aqueduc if no river), irrigate non-shielded grassland and mine hills, search for monotheism and built cathedral, then university, then bank. Now you got a very strong core city.

Usually i play the german and i dont go war until i m into republic, most of the time i prefer a.i. declare war on me, so i ask them to leave my territory, i dont trade with them( unless i need an allie). i always go war with veteran units ( so i built some barrack). a succesfull early war need at least 4-5 attacking units per stack+ 2 defender. i hope it will help you.

I forgot to say, if you play a continent or archipelago map, it is strategicaly essential to built at least 2 city on the coast. This will allow you to built harbor and shipe later on. Most of the time my third city will be coastal and will built collossus ( after a temple is built).

Thanks a lot for your help. I forgot to mention, my game is completely in Japanese, (once I & my dad live here)and yes, I already played civ2, that I love.
Thanks! It's hard to play a game in a language you don't understand.

In Japanese? That's gotta be impossible if you don't know it. I recommend you buy an English version (or whatever your most comfortable with) before you do anything else. Then, read the manual. It will tell you all you need to know to learn the ropes.

If you try to play this game the same way you played Civ2, you won't get too far. There's more than enough differences to warrant reading the manual and doing the tutorial.

Don't be afraid to lose! How are you going to learn it if everything goes perfectly, or you have to reload each turn cuz you didn't like the result? There's an awful lot of things to NOT do that you need to know about.

Play the game. THEN ask for help.

Thanks for everything, guys You are great!!!!! My great difficult is just that: find English games here in Japan, they don`t exist! So I bought in Japanese, anyway I`m still trying to learn. Thanks a lot.
Shiranny.

Might also try devoting some free time to learning the language too....

Don't use the values that came with the game, especially the resource values (too low). EDIT. Check for better mods on the other forums.

Mikal:
I`m studying Japanese for six years right now and stil can`t get it. It is the fifth most difficult language in the world. But thanks anyway, it`s a good idea.Buy Shiranny

Yes but the Dutch language is also a difficult language
Ja dat is echt waar (if you can read this you are smart)

But that`s not the issue, if you are a newby just play like i did, and just read this **** and it will go fine, o Yeah try to keep your science rate very high that`s the most important thing!!!Greetings from Holland!!!

Not to get too far off topic, but I like the resource values the way they are. Usually I am large enough to have 1-2 of every resource in my territory. If I dont, I look for where they are and go found a city there. If the world is all settled, I try to trade for the resource. If all else fails, go kick someone's ass and take their resource. :D

If you edit up the resource values, IMO you take away a part of the game. There is meant to be battles over limited natural resources, just as there are in real life. If everyone has every resource, it takes away from the game. I like denying oil or aluminum or uranium from a rival civ.

Also Shirannybl, can you not buy an English version online or something? :)

DON'T DO THAT!!!

Before you break the rules, you must know what they are! How are you to know you hate the default settings just because the great Zouave said you would? He's not you (is he?)! How can he know what you'll like?

Worse, how are you gonna know what to change the values to if you DO feel they need to be changed, unless you have a point of reference?

So play the game as it was written, and THEN, IF you don't like it, make a few changes and see what the effect is. If you are experienced at wargames and such, you may be able to make more changes at a time than Joe Shmoe, but if you're not, just do a few things at a time.

Don't even download a mod pack until you know what you're doing. How are you going to know the mod pack is an improvement if you have no reference?

Although I will say this: get the graphics mod that lets you see what the citizens are. You can't tell from many of those pictures who's happy and sad and just okay. If you get that graphics mod, it shows little happy/sad faces so you know exactly what's what.

But that's it. Don't even get Snoopy's terrain graphics until you've gotten used to the default graphics. While we all think he made a great set of tiles, YOU MIGHT NOT AGREE, and how are you going to know how great they are until you've tried the original?
