New player seeking tips on 'How to play'

I've just bought both expansions and at the mo am struggling to beat Noble. Usually I declare war stupidly and find myself in a losing battle but a lot of games I've just been behind from the start and can't really see what I'm doing thats so horribly wrong. I thought I would start a game here where everyone can see what horrendous tactical decisions I am making and if so, correct them

Anyway, onto the game

I went 1 NW - does 1 floodplain rather than one hill have a significant advantage?

Settling on the hill 1N will give your city a +25% defense bonus and one extra from the city tile. It also puts you in range of the rice and cow. This is a good city location.

that appears to be a grassland hill... you only get the +1 hammer on a plains hill

Ctrl + R

This command will improve your play dramatically by showing you all the resources so you can go monopolize them. In addition, it makes screenshots easier to read.

It is a plains hill, so 1N is the best option.

I would agree with the 1n, all the tiles that are in your BFC that are "out of sight" are forests, meaning that if they are resources, they'll be spice probably, which is only so helpful in the beginning of the game
