In the case of Civ 4, we play so that we can:
(1) Conquer and dominate more land than any actual military leader in the past (i.e. One Aztec for all lands under the sun)
(2) Rewrite history, lead historical oppressed civs to achieve greater glory (i.e. Incans discovering Europe, instead of the other way around)
(3) To outresearch and gain victories over fellow human players (i.e. Mass cav rushing your friend's backward civ that is defended by longbows, modern armour in the 18th century)
What do you guys think? What attract civfanatics to Civ4?
