Anyone want to playtest my WIP remake of an old scenario by Javier Arriaga called Drole de Guerre? I added new UNITS graphics, changed some of the unit properties, added many new unit types and replaced inappropriate ones, and hope to make other changes as well later on. The original scenario is quite fun, depicting the battle of France, but has some inaccuracies, doesn't use the full number of unit slots, and has some bugs that detract from the game (when you recapture german cities, the partisan unit is the Italian infantry unit. I changed it in this test version to a copy of the German infantry unit for accuracy and moved italian infantry to a new slot). Many of the unit graphics are placeholders since I can't really make my own graphics, so if anyone wants to help make or find appropriate graphics I'd appreciate it. I've attached the ZIP file with the scenario. Let me know what you think!

Hi there, I barely started the scenario and there are some things which seem odd to me:

The units' shields are confusing: There are three different in the city and a fourth one is getting produced. Furthermore the units at the border have another shield too. That's way too much, man.

The French are researching Bronze Working, but it already appears in their list?

And the French mobile infantry could get past the German fortifications like a partisan unit, allowing it to attack the city of Heidelberg in the first turn.

When I started the scenario as a French, which you recommended, I had to wait several minutes for the Germans to complete their first charge. I'd suggest you reduce the Ned/Bel city defenders to one unit only and give the Germans some less units at the beginning. In the end they devour those cities and loose about five units. So why don't you reduce them to that number from the very beginning?

And it would be nice to have at least a health bar the fortifications, because I don't know if they are worth attacking another round or not.

  • So, this scenario was NOT made by me. I'm revamping it and the old scenario has a readme which answers several of your questions, namely regarding research (there is no tech to research in this scen, it's total war; you are supposed to set science tax % to zero) and why the germans get to move first (this is a historical scenario representing a surprise attack!). I did not create this scenario. Javier Arriaga created it about *20*! years ago. It is intended to be historically accurate, which is why I cannot simply reduce Belgium and Netherlands cities to one infantry unit only - in reality they lasted for many days and making it too easy for the Germans might make the scenario too quick (in my opinion). As for the unit shields, I hastily copy-pasted the graphics from various scenarios and plan to fix the unit graphics as soon as I can. They are mostly placeholder graphics because I will need to create some from scratch and/or revamp some units. I'm attaching a file called To Do which lists future changes that I want to make. The most drastic change I want to make is putting the BEF entirely under French (human) player control and eliminating most of the naval units as they are irrelevant and overpowered.

Yeah, I understood that, but I thought you might want to refurbish it completely.

You also wrote that the partisan unit is German now, but do the other civs also have the guerilla warfare technology?
No. I've played the original scenario a lot and the other civs don't produce partisans, including Italy. I'm definitely going to experiment with overhauling the units in this scenario to depict more detail. The naval units (esp. the carrier unit) are quite inappropriate and detract from the Blitzkrieg focus of the Battle of France, although a few will need to be retained (especially if I combine the British and French civs and allow for a Dunkirk style evacuation; in that case I will instate a house rule where British units can't be produced in French cities and vice versa), with the rest being replaced by more air and ground units for the allied side. I also may include the BEF in the French army so that their units don't block French unit movement.

edit: I don't want to change the tech tree. No room for research in a ~60 day campaign.
