Ted

Thanks Ted, is changed now.
I must have hit the wrong button.

BTW
I ran the save through MapStat.
(What a clever little tool, I am impressed, especially since it is SOOO simple to use).

That's the result:
Landmass - 316 tiles required to domination
Population - 255 pop required

There are 693 unclaimed tiles left (Carthage has 1273 tiles).
So in theory that means we would not even need to take on big bully boy.
But then again, where is the fun with chickening out :satan:

Have fun.

Pre-flight checks... OK :thumbsup:

I'm surprised they haven't won yet! The slope is in our favour though :)

Research 50& (still 3 turns @ +244gpt)

Notes
I didn't fancy our chances against Carthage without a signicant military buildup. Then, halfway through my turn I thought "Why not build a Spaceship?" :)
So that's what I started to do. I switched most builds to research/commerce/culture.
Spaceflight is due in 3 turns.
I have Workers roading every possible working tile. There are still a few on automove that I didn't manage to catch during my turns.

The save is > here <

Ted

Will we have enough time to do so with Carthage approaching possible culture win? It would be a bummer to have sweet victory slip through our fingers now.
But I do see your point though. Carthage is just soo strong.

The only chance I saw with domination was to declare war ourself and use our first turn to get as many tiles as possible. But I am not sure if we could have managed 300 tiles in the very first turn.

Our culture is increasing with respect to Carthage :)

When I first looked at the Culture graph I thought we'd lost already, but we're definitely pulling back.

I thought Carthage's defenses were too strong to take anything but the isolated towns on the first turn of war. And I really didn't hold out much hope of surviving the counterattack :)

It really seems to be a detente situation which I hope will work in our favour.

Ted

Roster:
- Betazed <- on the bench
-Yndy
-Shevek
-TedJackson <- just played
-Tarkeel <- up

This was one of the things I wanted to check but forgot. IIRC, Carthage had 5 times our culture. We might be closer now but I don't think we have more than half their culture yet. So if they hit 100k before we hit 50k, they win.

I'm at work now but maybe one of you can check out culture and approximate Carhage's. Space could be good but

-Chartage might attack us anytime.

I'm not sure about this but I'm not against it either. Just continue the efforts towards domination anyway so that if a war brokes out and we can still go towards domination.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear but I was still working toward domination but thought we might get a shot at the Spaceship without fighting Carthage.

Tark1
Turn 0: 1625 AD
I don't even recognize the map...

Start off by rushing temples around to expand culture.

Turn 1: 1630 AD
Irrigate and road, found 2 cities

Turn 2: 1635 AD
More roading

Turn 3: 1640 AD
Discover Spaceflight, start nuclear power at 50% (240gpt)
Start Apollo Program in Beijing
Yangchow 2 flips, but Carthage doesn't want it! Never seen that before
Global Warming helps jungle clearing.
Found 2 cities
Rush somemore temples

Turn 4: 1645 AD
More roads and irrigation
Found 1 city

Turn 5: 1650 AD
More roads and irrigation
We have a crapload of Carthages units in our territory.
We are past the tiles needed, but need 163 more pop.
Start some prebuilds for space parts

Turn 6: 1655 AD
More roads etc

IBT:
Tark1-CultureLoss.jpg

Our final score: 6092
Carthage: 9627

Call it hindsight or anything else. But this is exactly what I was worried about and said so earlier.

Gawd! I hate to be right everytime! :cry:

Oh for a version of Apollo that works with PTW :(

Ted

Oh well. :sad:
I think we still did really well considering the map. Carthages early advantage was just too big.

Even though we did not win I enjoyed this game a lot. This was my first SG to finish and I feel encouraged to try the next one soon.
I learnt a lot from all of you (eg research in deity, the power of massed artillery) and am quite sure my overall play has improved quite a bit.

So don't cry. It was lots of fun.
Thanks all. :beer:

I'm sorry to see we failed this one. We were not the most suitable crowd for this game but we did not know its details.

I think this game could have been won although not easy. Still a little recap of what we did achieve:
- survived the Ancient Age without any single resource and being the weakest of the AI;
-survived the Medieval Ages again without a single resource and under constant threat from our neigbors;
-Managed to capture key locations from an AI 3 times bigger than us and a bunch of techs ahead (Babylon);
-Imposed our de facto domination with the advent of tanks and destroyed all civilizations but one;
-Managed to handle the entire game without having built a single great wonder;
-Avoided a Diplomatic victory by keeping the AIs fighting;
-Avoided a Space Ship victory buy holding key resources;
-Got very close to domination.

PS: When my computer hang 20 turns before we lost, Chartage sneak attacked us and razed some 48 undefended cities before the game stuck. I waited 2 hours for another unit to move and actually they did move, one unit every 45 minutes.
I asked Moonsinger to end the turn for me but Carthage did not attack the second time and they did not attack Shevek either.

Cheers,

Yeah, I was impressed by the catchup from medievel to modern ages, that was very impressive.

Was a rather fun game all in all (in the time I played it).

Anyone want to go back to the "Fork" and play the aternative game?

Ted

What 'fork' do you mean??
But in general, going back and replaying part of the game with the outcome of one set of decicion already known, is maybe better done on one's own. :)

Even though we lost I think we fought valiantly and should leave it there.
