New SG: Tark1

Given that we're playing a standard size map on deity then Tarkeel's suggestion of 3 then 6 for initial ring sizes sounds achievable. Anything beyond that may fall foul to AI incursions.

The 3 ring being used for worker/military production only I take it?

Ted

Since the map is customised for RCP I assume there will not be decisions like whether or not to build on nice cows in order to complete a ring?
Building cities on bonus tiles might hurt at the beginning.

I got the 3/6 idea from GenghisFarb's pic in the RCP thread:

Just move the NW/NE/SW/SE outer cities out one square :)

RCP @3 and @6 seems a little crowded for me.

My suggestion is Ring one at 3, 3.5 or 4 pending on terrain (if one city is on a cow @3, we won't build at three. We should build at least 6 of the possible 8 cities in the first ring (we could skip/delay the cities with worst positioning.

Second ring should be somewhere between 7 and 9, again depending on terrain. We should build a lot of cities there: at least 15.

Rough building order should be:

-turn capitol into settler factory (granary).
-build settlers in capitol, workers in Ring One
-build another one or two settler factories in Ring One (best sites), and barracks/ military/ more workers in the remaining cities
-build military in Ring one military camps and workers in Ring two cities
-build military everywhere

When done building rings: upgrade military -> attack -> Golden Age -> More military -> Get half the map -> upgrade again -> attack -> end game at Cavalry the latest.

From this perspective I'd like to play either Iroquois or one of the nations that have the UU at Chivlary. Egypt is also possible but a little risky.

Bear in mind that this would work if applied consistently

Yndy, I would agree with you.
I'd prefer a less dense build as well, like 3.5 or 4 first ring and 8 or so second.
This way we need not to abandon the first ring cities after hospitals.

I guess we will have to do some fighting before finishing the outer ring. I cannot imagine that the other civs will not encroach on 'our' territory.
Judging from this initial discussion this is going to be a very interesting game. :)

Wait...3.5 ring? How is there half a square?

Let me guess, based on looking at the map. If a city that is two diagonal squares away is a 3 ring...N, S, E, and W squares count as 1.5 when counting ring distances, and NW, SW, NE, and SE squares count as 1? :)

I would like to be in, if
  • it's deity, and
  • it's 1.29, because I'm on Macintosh
I tried some RCP in gotm21, but that map was not really well suited ...

Cgannon64, 3.5 ring is 2 x NW plus 1 x N or 1 or W for example

Shevek, yes cities will be crowded around size 10 but let’s hope it won’t matter by then. I don’t think we’ll need to fight for the second ring, among others because

the map is very symmetrical, and all start locations are identical.
but if we do that should not be a problem :)

tao, civ 1.29 would not be a problem for me, but it’s up to tark actually

I think I may have to drop out if this game is Civ 1.29, just because it would be a massive pain to play two SGs and a personal game in 1.21 and then uninstall the entire PTW program.

I would watch avidly though, because I'm dying to learn how to properly play RCP. :)

Why would you need to uninstall PTW?

<edit> I'm currently in playing two SGs, one Civ3 1.29 & the other in PTW 1.21, without any problems.

The Cut'n'Paste gods frown on me again :( :)

Ted

Map is made in PTW, and I was planning to use some of the PTW civs as opponents. That, and we are already quite full with 5 players.

Edit: Ok, we are down to 4 players, so we have room for one. I will see how it works converting the map back to vanilla Civ later tonight, and if that works we'll just have to do without the PTW civs :)

I'd like to get this rolling. Some very interesting ideas so far, will be fun to see them implemented :)

OK, I think I'm going to drop out of this one. With SGs piling up as well as life responsabilities, this game being on Diety, and it being an RCP game, I think I'd to more damage then good to the team. I will watch avidly though, so I can learn the ways of RCP. :)

Either PTW1.21 or Vanilla 1.29 is fine with me BTW.

I am going away for the weekend, and won't be back before Sunday evening. I was hoping to kick it off before I leave later tonight, so would be great if you could agree on a civ :)

I hope converting the map back to vanilla civ works, never tried going that way before.

IIRC, I thought we decided to have either Ottos or Chinese since both of them are Industrious and have a decent UU.

I think someone mentioned Iroquis as well. If we are going with vanilla civ, then that leaves China.

Speaking of vanilla Civ... Hope I can find my CD :( Not used the normal CD for ages now.

@Tarkeel By all means, post the save before you leave.

I thought of the Arabs but I’d prefer China instead of Ottomans (Iroquois/China if you mange to use the map to v1.29). There are few games with the Arabs anyway and the expansionist/religious traits are very good at the beginning.

Betazed, when Tarkeel posts the save’ you’ll play first right?

I am at work now. {Yes I am ashamed at my work ethics. Browsing CFC while at work. :blush: }

I will not be able to play till tonight which is at least 10 hours away. So if you want to take it before that feel free.
