It doesn't look bad. It is really quite interesting. It is quite a challege to model such a character.
The comments on it looking a little plastic have to do with the specularity being a little high. If you do future renders like this I would suggest, lower specularity and a slight texture (bump mapping) on the surface.
Also, I have no idea how impossible it would be to do with your 3d software.. but having his face not hold such a static pose might also help a little.
