New Unit: Modern Legion November 15th 2004

Great unit, of course! I won't use it for the Romans exclusively, either, and have yet to check out the myriad (sheesh!) of animations. Impressive nonetheless, and sure to get more so once I know what I'm talking about.

And if you think this is alot wait until I finish the Hobbit for the lottery... It's turned into a Worker/Settler/Stone Thrower... That's going to be a lot of animations.
The Hobbit is going to throw stones? What, with me babbling on about giants throwing stones à la that Panda, Mr. K mustav got confused! (or inspired?) Not that hobbits can't throw a mean stone, of course...

Nah, it's rather so that YP requested what we need, regardless of your giants...

Well someone suggested an attack animation for the hobbit worker and I figured a stone throwing hobbit would be a bit more formidable than a rake wielding hobbit.

Kinboat, thanks a billion, my Yevon UU lineup is now complete :goodjob:

As for the stone throwing hobbit, I remember reading in the Appendicies of the Lord of the Rings books that hobbits were excellent at archery and stone throwing, sot it only makes sense.

Awesome work Kinboat as usual. Looking forward to that Hobbit. I've been waiting for a unit like that for some time. I always knew it would be made eventually because of the Lord of the Mods. This unit though will go in my personal mod.

First, love the Modern Legion(ary) . Granted, I want to use him for SAS units, but it is awesome.
Second...we can have a rake wielding hobbit? 'Cause I'll put money towards that one  .

check out kindred72's dragonlance type halfling for a mean slinger, but generaly hobbits are peacefull people and only throw stones at other hobbits who are trying to steal their food, you wouldn't want to use a sling for that purpose, cos it'd kill em'.

Exelent unit anyhow kinboat, I don't know how you have the patience to do so many different animation options. :)

Hmm, remember when Sam nailed Bill Ferny in the noggin with an apple as they were leaving Bree? That might be where the idea that Hobbits can throw a mean stone might come from...in similar fashion to when Pippin tells young Bergil son of Beregond that hobbits may be small, but know a good many wrestling tricks. While a midget throwing stones might not look much more formidable than a midget wielding a rake, it will certainly be a welcome change in animation!

Come to think of it, wheren't the Tookish Hobbits rather accomplished archers? (My apologies for going rather off topic here...)

...Sigh, my grey-mannish thoughts turn to giants hucking boulders...

Bilbo had never seen or imagined anything of the kind. They were high up in a narrow place, with a dreadful fall into a dim valley at one side of them. There they were sheltering under a hanging rock for the night, and he lay beneath a blanket and shook from head to toe. When he peeped out in the lightning-flashes, he saw that across the valley the stone-giants were out and were hurling rocks at one another for a game, and catching them, and tossing them down into the darkness where they smashed among the trees far below, or splintered into little bits with a bang.

From The Hobbit, Chapter 4: Over Hill and Under Hill

Kinboat,

Great looking unit with absolutely no flaws that I can detect. I have to laugh at the number of responses you get every time you post a new unit. Without fail, the comments go into the second page in less than 24 hours. We know quality when we see it.

Re: Hobbit ... Is this "little" guy going to be able to cross over into the epic game? I could use a stone-chunking "David" to take down some of the Goliaths.

That and the fact that we demand quality... His threads usually go into the second page in less than 24 hours because people start discussing what's next and what they want it to look like (as you can see).

That's actually a pretty neat idea. However, it sounds like the Hobbit will throw stones instead of sling them (there is a Kender pole slinger that has already been noted above, but that's not very Davidish). As cool as a wee-David-slinger unit might be, in the case of the Hobbit I hope Kinboat sticks with a mere thrower. Maybe for your David dude you could shrink down Dom's balearic slinger?

Edit:

This will stop as soon as KB opens a preview thread for the Hobbit! :)

HooDoo, for a David unit, why not use either the Balearic Slinger or Macabee?

Changing the palette might be a little hard... Since it is a darker unit any change of colors on the palette are liable to cause changes in a lot of areas. I mentioned earlier a PM I sent to Xen... I didn't really want it generally known because I thought it would cause everyone to call in their color changes but... I might be doing a version of this guy with a green forest camo pattern, that would probably be better suited to a paratrooper unit. If I do this it won't be especially soon (I get sick of staring at the same unit for days on end and need a break :D ).

All,

I was speaking metaphorically (and obviously too enigmatically) as to all "vertically challenged" units when I referred to the stone-throwing Hobbit as a "David". I first was going to refer to him as an "Opie Taylor" (you know, throwing rocks into the pond), but figured that might be too obscure for those of you who were not forced to watch the Andy Taylor show as children.

The real thrust of my question is whether the Hobbit can be used as a worker/settler/stone thrower in the epic game, or is he going to be a pure fantasy unit. Sorry for the confusion. I'll try to be less whimsical next time. :D

Ummm... actually, it was the Andy Griffith Show. :mischief:

Which reminds me of a funny Simpsons episode in which they're watching an episode of Andy Griffith where Griffith is out and Charles Bronson fills in for him. Barney comes into the office.

Barney: Where's Otis? He's not in his cell.

Bronson: I shot him.

Barney: WHA?!

Bronson [shotgun in hand]: And now I'm going down to Emmitt's Fix-It Shop... to Fix Emmitt.

of course, you coudl always bribe me by just making a 3rd century centurion, with all those little suggested modifacations, in that old request thing of mine, if your lookign for somthign new to do
:mischief: (well, you have to admit, compared with all the other Roman units, he dose look significantlly different)

regardless, thank you for doing what you have in fact already done, I know I, and it appears many other appreciate your work, even if they are going to use for barbarian SAS troopers or the like ;)
