Here is a preview of a unit I'm working on called Fire Longbowman. I know, its not a big graphic change :D but it works.

Feedback on the unit would be appreciated.

Why thank you Dark Sheer!

I'm about 60% done with the attack flc for the unit. After that there is only the death and fortify flc left to do. The other flcs don't need to be edited.:D I'm hoping to finish the attack flc tommorow. Then I'll post the other angles. As for the other two flcs, I'm not sure when I'll finish. On Tuesday I have to go back to school:rolleyes: and between shcool, homework, dinner, etc. I don't have a lot of free time each day to work on editing. So until the next update...:nya2:

I managed to finish the attack flc last night but had to finish the preview animations this morning.
I'm going to post the rest of the angles. I set a late completion date for the whole unit of this Saturday.

looks great... ill get this one when its done ;)

yes! that looks great. what programs are you using to completely start and finish this project. yes, i am a lowly newbie to this scene, and id love to learn to make these.

Pop over to the Utility programs forum and pick up FLICster - you'll need it to work with the CIv3Unit Animations- they are non-standard FLCs. There's a bunch of info in the readme and on the thread. Then, go to the Tutorials forum and read DarkSheer's outstanding tutorial on unit creation.

Good luck! Looking forward to more units!

Looks very good - When completed I'd like to try to figure out how to add it in to my "Unit-Mania" mod-pack.

If you haven't given thought to the stats for this unit (assuming the standard Civ3 setup) maybe should be same as for Longbowmen but with extra "Bombard" ability (and one extra cost ?)

Say Attack 4 (or 5?) , Defense 1 (or 2 ?), Move 1
Bombard 2 (or 3? ) / 1 / 1

thanks moeniir!! my brain fired yesterday from all the new information :-) this sounds like a lot of fun. i already have a great idea for unit graphics, now i just need to learn how to actually draw the characters in photoshop!! thats the only part im missing.

Hey, good to hear that you already have an idea how to make some new flc. ;) Did you find the tutorial useful?

I would suggest you get a picture somewhere to start rather than draw your first unit from scratch. Its much painless that way.

dark sheer, i found your tutorial remarkable! thanks for taking the time to make that for us newbies.

i have a picture i want to take from somewhere, but i dont think its a .flc format. is the .flc format a standard in games? if not, are there converters that can convert it to a .flc format? i think i posted this in the tutorial board, but the link i am missing is how do i take a picture and save it in the .flc format? im at work, so i dont know if photoshop has the ability to save in that format.

FLC is a standard animation format, HOWEVER, Civ3 uses a non-standard variation. There's alot more info in the FLICster thread (and the readme file) over in the utils forum.

Basically, you have 2 options - You can use FLICster to convert an existing Civ3UnitFlc into a set of 8 standard FLCs (one for each direction, SW,S,SE,E, etc) using FLICster. Then you use a tool like Animation Shop (from Jasc) to edit the FLC. There are some caveats to this approach, documented on the FLCster thread. DarkSheer, who has created numerous great units, prefers this approach because of some of the Animation Shop features, like Frame duplication, transition frames, Easy frame insertion, etc. Once done, you re-merge the standard FLCs into a Civ3UnitFlc using FLICster. you'll still edit the individual frames using a tool like PaintShopPro (also from jasc, integrates with AS).

The other option is to skip the animation tool and edit the frames directly, using the PCX Export option of FLICster. This will create a pcx with 8 rows of animations frames (called a storyboard), or 8 PCX's, each containg one row of frames (called filmstrips) or one PCX per file (called Cels). The variety is to try to make it easy to use with various tools. FLICster lets you view the animation directly from the PCX(s) as you edit, and re-merge them into a FLC when done. This is the approach I prefer, because I don't like Animation Shop. Eventually, I hope to add more features to FLICster to match the useful features of Animation Shop, thus turning DarkSheer from the dark side :D. Plus, using PCX files (especially the storyboard format) eliminates other issues having to do with how Civ3 interprets palettes (more detail in the other forum).

Good luck!

damn, its refreshing to come to a forum where ppl actually want to help you!! you guys are great!

Im going to replace the other longbowman with this one.
