ok after playing a few games and getting bored on settler I bumped it up to noble. I lost my first noble game because catherine got space race before me, didnt have any alluminum :(, but one thing that I couldnt figure out was she had much higher GNP than me, a little higher manufacturing, and about the same of food production. I had almost all cottages and my production really suffered, so did my populations. But i was barely keeping up in the tech race. Im just wondering about how many farms do you ahve per city? Do you ever put workshops? I almost always put windmills on hills unless it has a resource. oh and i played as america
Also im in my 2nd noble game as ghandi, on archipalego so im not used to it. But my production and food is really high, but my GNP is incredibly low, how do i balance these? I noticed my GNP dropped real fast once i entered a war. is that normal or not? cause im running @ 50% research and no culture and im barely staying afloat

You probably need threads on basic empire management. The answers to these questions would comprise essays.

You want the correct multipliers in cottage or hammer cities though. Late game when you have most or all the space techs, it's OK to bulldoze tiles in favor of more workshops/production.

I think it is about what you want to do with a city... if its a gp farm, then farm it all the way, maybe one mine on a hill to have a bit of production to erect libraries, temples monasteries etc... If it is a hammer city, you will need at least one good food resource, so that you can sustain high pop. I build workshops in hammer cities IF my food resource is high enough... but IMO workshops are not good until caste system? or was it serfdom... anyway workshops get stronger with right civics, it even produces +1 food with state propery I guess (sorry I didnt memorize the effects of civics)...

if it is a cottage city, then no workshops, only and maybe watermills on river tiles and cottage the rest...

But the main issue here is the food resources, just count the food output in the BFC and plan your city, sure it needs practice but after a while you will do it with a blindfold :) (I still cant BTW :D)
