Hello everyone, yesterday I bought Civ 4 Gold (Civ4+Warlords) and when I first started the game it seemed as normal, each citizen taking 2 food the rest going into growth...I started a second game and now all of my surplus is going into hammers -ex my settler in queue...Every game I start now is like this, I assume it is an option that I must have messed with, but I cant figure out what it is. As much as I love building massive amounts of 1pop villages I don't think that is a viable strategy :) If someone knows what I've done please pass on how to fix it. thanks in advance.

When you build a settler or worker, your city stops growing and all excess food is converted into hammers. This is why sometimes it is beneficial to let your city grow to pop 2 before starting your first worker.

Switch to a different build and everything will go back to normal. :D

It is rather a controversial topic, but you'll notice most of the advanced players build a worker right off the bat, with a size 1 city.

To put it simply, at size 1 you can put 3 food+hammers into the settler, whereas at size 2 you can put 4 food+hammers. Seeing as how the improvements the worker would build would rapidly be very beneficial to you, the 3 to 4 increase for a whole lot of waiting is not worth it.

When to build a Worker depends, if you're fortunate enough to start near Corn for example, the city will grow fast and you can read a pop of 2 or 3 before churning out a worker. It usually takes that long to research Agriculture anyway if you don't start with it.
