I just got the game not too long ago, and just got to the point where I can always win on Warlord. I jumped up to Monarch in hopes to get ready for the new WOTM. So far I’m a bit dumbfounded, so I’m hoping some of you experts can give me some advice.

I started expanded two cities past my capital and both were close. Then I took out a barbarian city that was very close to one of mine and kept it because I needed a costal city. Then Fredrick built a city close to my capital taking over some key iron, so I destroyed that and put my own city there, and ended the war.

Now I can’t keep any money, I’m losing money every turn, I have lost several units, my research stays below 20% and I can’t build any more building. I’m literally making swordsmen and deleting them. I’m researching currency but at this rate it will take 200+ turns. By time I get this worked out Shaka will have gunpowder units and I still won’t have longbows and my good friend Shaka will wipe me off the planet.

How do you get around this problem? What should I have done differently? I can see the civs have a large number of cities large armies and more techs. I must be doing something wrong and I can tell this game is already lost.

Way too many archers. If most of the archers had been swords/axes you could probably have killed one of your rivals easily with such a huge force. All those defensive units aren't doing anything other than costing upkeep. Maybe there's hope if you delete most of them while whipping swords and axes. Wage war against Frederick and use the money from his captured cities to fuel research. Continue researching Currency. Alphabet, Monarchy and Code of Laws will also help a lot. Get Construction and you may be able to take out Wang Kon and get the Hindu holy city for yourself. You may have also expanded too fast. Neglecting Alphabet was a huge mistake as well. Technology trading is how you keep pace with the AI at Monarch and above.

EDIT: Wow, can't believe I didn't notice this on the first look: Chopping will help too. It looks like you haven't chopped a single forest the entire game. You have way too much undeveloped land. I counted a grand total of two cottages on your land and that's really what is killing you.

I'm no expert but I think warlord to monarch is one hell of a jump! I've been playing Noble for a while now and just moving up one level to prince hurts.

I'd advise trying to progress through the levels one at a time, rather than trying to rush up to monarch.

You always more than welcome to take part in the Nobles Club Games, a place for players progressing from warlord to noble to prince. We all play the same save and compare strats offer each other tips etc...

Yes, warlord to monarch would be a MAGIC jump. Oh man, it took me a week and a half of play to go noble to prince, then a couple more weeks to manage monarch. Warlord to monarch? If you can do it, kudos.

I'll have a look see at your save tomorrow if I have time. School is in my way! :(.

Typically people's economy crash when they expand too much, and then they have to cottage (if they're negative) and/or run scientists to recover. When you can, build courthouses, and if you need to, sell tech and resources.

Ya it is a crazy jump. So far my economy has been pillaging. Pillaging Fredrick got me one teck then he ran out of stuff and I took him out. I was stuck so I took on Korea (Shaka looked to powerful to me). I'm still trying to get alphabit so I can trade. Geez, next I'll try to get some cottages going. This has been crazy. The Barbarians are keeping up with me on tech. At least they aren't coming after me every other turn now that I took Fredrick and his great wall out. Let Shaka deal with them for a while. The WOTM is on Immortal which I assume will be silly, and is why I'm trying this, which also seems silly.

Thanks for the info about the Noble's Club. If I had BTS I would join it for sure, but I'm still on warloads.

As it is I need to figure out a way to make some gold while taking out Korea and then Shaka who has a huge army from the looks of it. Then I'm in a tech race with whoever I haven't met yet. I'm afraid I'm going to see battleships come up to my archers soon. lol

Darn! I keep forgetting about all this expansion craziness! I just keep assuming everyone plays with BTS, my bad! good luck with the game. :)
