    BOTM 145: Catherine of Russia.

You have a deity game without any help. The only change I made to the map was that, when I checked it, it turned out that the map was missing quite a few resources. So I edited it to add the missing resources, giving almost all of then of course to the AIs. Enjoy! May you live at least until 3000BC...

    Game settings:
    Playing as: Catherine of Russia
    Rivals: 4 AIs
    Difficulty: Deity
    Starting Era:
    Ancient
    Speed: Normal
Options: No goody huts, no random events
    Victory Conditions:
    All enabled

    Map settings:
    Map: Oasis
    World Wrap: None
    Mapsize: Small
    Climate: Temperate
    Sea level: Medium

Catherine is Creative and Imperialistic, and you start with Hunting and Mining.

The Creative trait gives +2 culture/city each turn and double production speed of Colosseum, Library and Theatre

The Imperialistic trait gives +100% great general emergence and +50% production of settlers

    Unique unit: Cossack (replaces Cavalry)
The Cossack benefits from: 50% combat bonus against mounted units. This compares with the Cavalry which has: no directly comparable benefits.

Unique Building: Research Institute (replaces Laboratory)
In addition to the benefits of the laboratory, the research institute gives 2 free scientists. But since you won't live long enough to build any research institutes, it doesn't really matter, does it?

    Software Versions

Windows: This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Civ4 Vanilla or Warlords), patched to version 3.19, and with the BUFFY mod version 3.19.003 installed. You can download the BUFFY mod here. Players using Windows Vista or Windows 7 are encouraged to read the notes on Vista fixes here.

Macintosh: This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Civ4 Vanilla or Warlords), patched to version 3.19, and with the Mac BUFFY mod version 3.19.003 installed. You can download the Mac BUFFY mod here.

    While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

And a second dry rice doesn't count.

Does the Oasis map script ensure that there is some kind of food in the BFC? If it doesn't then the start looks pretty scary indeed...

All I will say is that I said I gave almost all the extra resources to the AI. The one exception, which I gave to you, was a food resource (not rice).

Could you explain the logic behind that? The tiles 2W, 2W1S, 2S1W and 2S1E are fogged and unforested, how can you be sure that they don't have any food?

Creative is nice (gets the rice sooner lol). Is Imperialistic the worst trait?
I can't see Cossacks or Institutes making any difference - if they are used at all. Maybe RIs for space.
Do bananas and sugar count as food resources? Oasis maps have lots of corn which can't be seen in the desert.

Playing as Catherine, maybe we should demand the AIs give us whatever techs we are lacking. Let's see how that goes.

I will say a little more.
I generated four small oasis deity maps. Rice (when it was there) tended to be in the south (which is where player usually starts)
These were the missing resources per DS's nifty tool:
    • Clam, Whale, Gems, Aluminum, Sugar
    • Clam, Whale, Deer, Silver, Aluminum, Sugar, Incense, Silk, Stone, Marble
    • Whale, Wheat, Rice, Sheep, Deer, Silver, Wine, Incense, Silk
    • Clam, Crab, Whale, Wheat, Silver, Spices, Banana, Incense, Silk, Dye
From just four samples, the extra food we have been given could be Wheat, Sheep, Deer, Bananas or Sugar. Since it was given to the player, it might be in the bfc fog to the west and south. [edit - so move scout SW, SW to check for food]

Not that important to know what the AI were given. Result is no missing resources. So, we can capture Aluminum or Stone or whatever we want from the right AI. Horses (and seafood of course) tend to be in the north in oasis maps.

Oasis is a non-standard map script and can produce starts - human always starts in the South - with no visible resources. Horses are always in the North.

Personally I tend to consider banana as a food and sugar more as a happiness resource (which happens to give you a bit extra food as a side-effect).

I think we would see edges of corn/wheatfield if they were there. Cow/sheep might evade the fog gaze, but not crops... I think.

I also thought it's not possible to fog gaze for food here :)

Bananas are nice later, but that's later ~~
They sometimes make great resis to settle on for a quicker start.
