    BOTM 164: Justinian of Byzantium.

Justinian, Emperor of Byzantium. Boreal maps have lots of deer (203) but little else. Only available happiness resources are: fur (5), silver (3) and gems (47). It is also low on health resources (see spoiler for those stats). I don't expect any BC victories on this large map (surprise me).
Barbarians need to eat too, so we gave them Hunting and Archery like they should have.

Spoiler More Map Resource Information :
    from gotm tool:
And only one crab and one fish.
    No map edits.

    Game settings:
    Playing as: Justinian of Byzantium
    Rivals: 8 AIs
    Difficulty: Emperor
    Starting Era:
    Ancient
    Speed: Normal
Options: Random personalities, choose religions, permanent alliances, no goody huts (yes Events - its been a while since they were enabled)
    Victory Conditions: All enabled

    Map settings:
    Map: Boreal
    World Wrap:
    None
    Mapsize: Worldsize_large
    Climate: Climate_temperate
    Sea level: Sealevel_medium

Justinian is Spiritual and Imperialistic, and you start with Mysticism and The Wheel.
The Spiritual trait gives no anarchy and double production speed of Temple and Cristo Redentor

The Imperialistic trait gives +100% great general emergence and +50% production of settlers

    Unique unit: Cataphract (replaces Knight)
The Cataphract benefits from: base strength = 12, and not immune to first strikes. This compares with the Knight which has: base strength = 10, and immune to first strikes.

    Unique Building: Hippodrome (replaces Theatre)
+1 :) (Theatre has no "free" happiness)
+3 :culture: per turn (same as Theatre)
    +1 :) per 5% culture slider (Theatre +1/10%)
+1 :) if you have horse (Theatre needs dye (glwt))
double production speed for creative leaders (not Justinian)
No artist specialist slots (Theatre has 2)

oops :hide: [guess I wasn't counting that one as it hadn't started yet :mischief: ]

There are a lot of similarities between Dynamic Spirit's game starting today and this game. Equestrian based special unit and building, plus no boats needed.

I liked Swede's Inland Sea game. But that and my Pericles Archipelago both require much use of boats. So I decided to make a game that didn't need them. Justinian is one of the least played leaders for gotm. Also Boreal is a map that hasn't been used much.

edit, the other settings (Random Personalities, Choose Religion) were just for variety and to make playing a little less formulaic (can't tell from Religion alone what they have teched, need to observe behavior instead of knowing all about them as soon as you meet them).

    and Events :mischief:

Boreal can be fun, especially with the right leaders. Justy doesn't much suit any map due to his starting techs, but he can be fun.

I remember I had a event sometime 2010, and have not had them enabled since.
I guess it's time for me to at least try it out again now! :)

Boreal map sounds fun, there have been some discussions in S&T about fantasy realm lately. But thats abit too crazy for my taste.
The hippodrome solves any problems with lack of happines resources, but how to handle low health..? Save alot of forests?
Keeping cities small and tightly packed together to utilize overlapping forests for health?

Anyone with experience with either events or boreal map that can provide a pair of 1-liner crash course?:)

events are fun!: keep 20 gold in your bank to pay for small annoying negative events. In general, most events are good news.
quests are fun. You can try to trigger them. For example, researching Gunpowder early gives you a great chance at the "Guns Butter" quest.
Here's a list of which ones are enabled in BUFFY:
    Events and quests
'Horse whipserer' would be appropriate for this game.
It's a lot to read. Just lookup the quest when you are randomly assigned one so you know the reward options and when it's obsolete.
In the "Guns Butter" example, you'd want to know that you need to own the Taj when you complete the quest to get another free golden age.

    Boreal: steal workers, chop

BOTM has used fantasy realm maps a few times. The most famous one was kcd_swede's where the AI Barbarians started with Humbaba, a mobile artillery, that can't capture cities. Unless they are empty - game over turn 6 for a few players.:rotfl:

So, 'Stag' party at my place seems appropriate.

    SIP seems like a winner

I've never won above noble but I'd like to give this a try, any tips on starting out a generic emperor game? Do I prioritize workers/bronze working or just go warrior-warrior-settler?

Don't think one can give that many generic tips, the map is boreal, which is quite different from most other mapscripts.
My feeling is that it's abit easier though.
In 99% of cases you start with a worker first, in some costal maps you start with a workboat.

Certainly different from what I have always played. It's nice to get some variation and to expand ones horizons.

Barbs with archery and hunting - but not raging barbs? Trying to set a test game while I am waiting for a Mac save ;)

Yes, it's not raging barbs on in this game. Settings are provided at the top of this post.
I do think barbs start with arch+hunt on emperor per default, so just a normal emperor game should be fine. (Correct me if I'm wrong someone!)

Here is an alternative if you want to play a map others have played:
https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/nobles-club-xci-alexander-of-greece.453652/ (Nobles Club 91, Alexander in Boral, the settings are different though, not the same feel as BOTM 164)

Not related to this game in particular (and probably too late now). But some tips I remember when I was starting from reading forum threads about starting to play at Emperor level:
    • Don't pursue many wonders. Chop (especially on this map) any you really want.
    • Build more units than you are accustomed to.
    • and "In 99% of cases you start with a worker first, in some costal maps you start with a workboat."
Sorry about the delay. Request has been forwarded to our Mac map builder.

    Yup.
    Spoiler Behind the Scenes :
Some steps from our process: We create a worldbuilder file and open it as a scenario (in Buffy) to create the official saves. The wb file doesn't remember the game difficulty nor any barb tech knowledge. So we need to open the worldbuilder to give the barbarian the techs they should have.
This only matters for Monarch and above. And of course, only if barbarians are enabled. Also more often than not, I either forget or just get lazy and decide not to give them any techs. In this game I remembered and gave them the techs and told y'all about it.

Each month when the results are published, the wb files are released. You can play any of the old gotm's from these wb files. Player needs to set the difficulty level, select the civ, (and if applicable also give the barbs their techs) when using the wb file to play.

I always play with barbs on, I think they are a important obstacle to work with and consider in the early game.
Especially on large maps, on small crowded maps they are less of a factor.
But if barbs are missing archery, an important challenge of the early game dissapears.
I have sometimes played maps, forgotten to add the tech myself and then ragequit 50 turns later because I feel I played in cheat mode.

The other techs are not at all important, but giving them archery on higher difficulties is something I value! Thanks for doing it on this map! :)

AlanH and Deckhand, thanks for the Mac save! Playing already :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

What are exactly "random personalities"? When I tried a test game on Mac, I got more like unrestricted leaders, eg Huayna of Khmer  I thought random personalities would be e.g. Hyaena of Inca, but a warmonger. Or warmonger Gandhi, LOL, or Isabella not caring about your religion :crazyeye: Am I right?
