BOTM 281: Hannibal of Carthage.

You will play as Hannibal of Carthage on a Fractal map (medium sea level) at Monarch difficulty level. All AI start with standard starting technology, except barbarians who start without any technologies. Good luck and have fun!

Game settings:
Playing as: Hannibal of Carthage
Rivals: 6 AIs
Difficulty: Monarch
Starting Era:
Ancient
Speed: Normal
Options: City culture-flipping after conquest, no goody huts, no random events
Victory Conditions:
All enabled

Map settings:
Map: Fractal - medium seas
World Wrap: Cylindrical
Mapsize: Standard
Climate: Arid
Sea level: Medium
Map latitudes: -90°S to 90°N

Hannibal is Financial and Charismatic, and you start with Fishing and Mining.

The Financial trait gives +1 commerce on any plot that already has at least 2 commerce

The Charismatic trait gives +1 happiness/city, and -25% experience required for unit promotions

Unique unit: Numidian Cavalry (replaces Horse Archer)
The numidian cavalry is one of those unique units that is actually weaker than the unit it replaces - with a base strength of just 5. However, unlike the horse archer, it gets +50% against melee units, and also starts with the flanking I promotion (which gives +10% withdrawal chance).

Unique Building: Cothon (replaces Harbor)
The cothon gives +1 trade routes in its city. It's more expensive than the harbor though - 100 hammers instead of 80 hammers on normal speed.

While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads.

Hey, everybody... this is your chance to be a real Challenger without having to play at a higher difficulty level. You know what's out there and it shouldn't be all that scary if you play Monarch level routinely. Go for it! Or not... the Contender save might help early, letting you take higher risk strategies. But I would advise... suck it up, buttercup! Pull up your big boy panties and gain some extra XP for your military. Or not, no shame in that... it is a competition against our community of aficionados so you do you and we the gotm staff will sweep up afterwards. :grouphug:

I don't think barbs or AI start with mining at any level, also giving them mining + hunting means spearmen can appear from the start, if I'm not mistaken. A good challenge for sure, find that copper fast!
Suck it up, buttercup, LOL :hammer2:

Iirc, the barbs will get 2 beakers per turn for archery as long as we don’t have it. (+1 if we do)

Not sure the archery cost for barbs but they’ll probably be able to spawn archers starting about t35 or so. Of course, by then warriors may be fully spawned so 50% chance after each barb warrior dies, until the barbs have bw.

@antimony:
1. I don’t think kcd meant to be insulting at all. We just don’t do that here. I hope you can see that. 😉

2. I’ve been around here a long time and have probably been exposed to most CIV mechanics and I had NO CLUE about barbs spawning spears before BW. So I thank you for your PSA!

Frankly, this now makes sense. I always seem to get barb spears before axes. Now I understand why.

Btw, I tested it. Took away all AI techs and gave the barbs TW, Htg, and Mng. Sure enough when barbs started spawning units it was an even mix of warriors and spears.

:joke:
PSA?
"Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is a protein produced by normal, as well as malignant, cells of the prostate gland."
I had no idea about the barbarian spearmen spawning requirements but I think the tech for a PSA test seems a bit too much? Are spears carcinogenic? Could this be circumvented by using barb spearwomen instead?

Or maybe PSA means this:
"A PSA, or Public Service Announcement, refers to a post or message intended to raise awareness about a specific issue, educate the public, or promote a cause or important message."
If so, then it would make a good PSA to tell people what it stands for. At least for older boomers. As for me I still think Boomer refers to the original Battlestar Galactica Viper pilot.
:joke: No o-🤺 intended to anyone.

You might wanna get tested. It seems like you might have a malignant humor. 😅

Touché. No test needed. But I believe it originates in a totally different organ.
Diagnosis complete: A malignant brain humor.
Prognosis: Non-operable, terminal within host lifespan.
Recommendations: Isolate, quarantine, exterminate carrier. [Procedure in progress]

Look, I was just providing a PSA because I think the idea that mining unlocks spears for barbs (at least according to 'Why no barb spears?' https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/why-no-barb-spears.639714/post-15305018) is something non intuitive even for experienced players. Maybe it wasn't needed. I would say your insulting reply was even less needed. Adieu!
No offense intended, I was just going for laughs and failed. Your post is surely helpful to players, and be sure to keep up the community spirit.

No discussion of where to settle? I will assume that's because it's OBvious that we should SIP? (Er, right?) Looking forward to this one.

SIP might prevent the possibility of accessing seafood to the northeast.
I at least will probably try to scout for she-food first, any spearwomen can feed themselves on that while spearmen eat he-food.
Those FP look like they need financial cottages...

SIP might prevent the possibility of accessing seafood to the northeast.
Spot is too good though. My first thought was to settle on gold but that would not have the fresh water which is needed here. Does look like a hidden tile up there in case seafood, but def there could be some orphaned sea creatures.

It is not obvious where to settle. We can SIP for PH capital start. Or we can move NW to get wet corn in capital. The latter option ruins much more possible seafoods, though. Oh, we can settle 2W as well and ruin no seafood, but no capital floodplains then.

I'm leaning towards SIP, but it is a close call.
My first thought was to settle on gold
But the gold isn't even riverside

But the gold isn't even riverside
Well, yeah  I did make that point above as SIP is freshwater, which will be sorely needed with all those FPs

moving the warrior north east will reveal as many as four water tiles, leaving only one fogged tile of potential seafood lost. But if that warrior reveals more seafood that we would lose, then they choice becomes complicated
