[BTS] News: BOTM 281 - Hannibal, Monarch - Starts October 25

The mapmaker would never be so evil as to let us strand seafood resources with such a tempting settling location. (What's the "straight face" emoticon?)

He’s been rather evil these days, in my opinion. I’m expecting the evil. I look forward to being pleasantly surprised if he’s not. I’m not talking about just settling, by the way.

I guess I'd be  too if I had to just make Gotms instead of playing them. I don't have the same excuse myself so I need another one.

Ceterum censeo Kremlin esse delendam. Furthermore, I consider Kremlin to need to be destroyed. (This is not evil, only wise IMO. Only collateral damage might make it evil.)
EDIT: added wikipedia link if someone needs background. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carthago_delenda_est

Where in freakin’ hell did you learn that?!!! 😉

Learn what? The famous phrase about Carthago? Ages ago in a freaking [censored] called the school. But your reference is very fitting, it was a freaky and infernal experience. The latin phrase I found on wikipedia and I changed the name to something that needs to be destroyed. I don't speak latin, unless it's pig latin. It's all greek to me.

Ceterum censeo Kremlin esse delendam.

Spoiler threads would be welcome.

I haven't played for a long time, so a question as reminder. You cannot build cothon on lake, right? I need to settle 1NE for it?

Also:
Sorry, file saves/gotm70281/civ4botm281challenger.CivBeyondSwordSave is not available.
while trying to download challenger save

This is probably right. You would also be able to build a Levee, then.
But, would you want to move out of a 2h city tile for that ?
Probably yes, especially if initial move uncovers seafood. I would not on Pangea, but it is Fractal and I expect some fruity commerce from intercontinetal trade routes and it returns some turns of worker building road and instant trait with 1st expansion 1SE from gold.

Also without risking seafood, I am basically forced to tech agriculture intead of just wheel bronze and pottery to flourish.

BOTM 281: Hannibal of Carthage.

You will play as Hannibal of Carthage on a Fractal map (medium sea level) at Monarch difficulty level. All AI start with standard starting technology, except barbarians who start without any technologies. Good luck and have fun!

Game settings:
Playing as: Hannibal of Carthage
Rivals: 6 AIs
Difficulty: Monarch
Starting Era:
Ancient
Speed: Normal
Options: City culture-flipping after conquest, no goody huts, no random events
Victory Conditions:
All enabled

Map settings:
Map: Fractal - medium seas
World Wrap: Cylindrical
Mapsize: Standard
Climate: Arid
Sea level: Medium
Map latitudes: -90°S to 90°N

Hannibal is Financial and Charismatic, and you start with Fishing and Mining.

The Financial trait gives +1 commerce on any plot that already has at least 2 commerce

The Charismatic trait gives +1 happiness/city, and -25% experience required for unit promotions

Unique unit: Numidian Cavalry (replaces Horse Archer)
The numidian cavalry is one of those unique units that is actually weaker than the unit it replaces - with a base strength of just 5. However, unlike the horse archer, it gets +50% against melee units, and also starts with the flanking I promotion (which gives +10% withdrawal chance).

Unique Building: Cothon (replaces Harbor)
The cothon gives +1 trade routes in its city. It's more expensive than the harbor though - 100 hammers instead of 80 hammers on normal speed.

You will play as Hannibal of Carthage on a Fractal map (medium sea level) at Monarch difficulty level. All AI start with standard starting technology, except Barbarians start with Hunting, Mining, and Archery like one might normally see at Monarch level. Good luck and have fun!

Here is a link to a list of the differences between Vanilla, Warlords and BtS.

Software Versions

Windows: This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Civ4 Vanilla or Warlords), patched to version 3.19, and with the BUFFY mod version 3.19.005 installed. You can download the BUFFY mod here. Players using Windows Vista or Windows 7 are encouraged to read the notes on Vista fixes here.

Macintosh: This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Civ4 Vanilla or Warlords), patched to version 3.19, and with the Mac BUFFY mod version 3.19.003 installed. You can download the Mac BUFFY mod here.

While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads.
when you down the file to play on your pc do you copy the file from your harddrive to your civ 4 save game file? or do you cut and paste it to your game file?

You can open your save from wherever (usually your downloads folder ), however,
You do need to have the current version of the BUFFY mod installed : http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/mod.php

Submit anyhow... I think a lot of games (particularly first time after installing HOF) will have this. Sometimes the mapmaker opening the map to create the file(s) records as a player start, especially if mapmaker had to put down some AI cities and edit them. When this happens the mapmaker recognizes it and can over-ride the automated systems. The number 1 rule is do not replay any turns, and the Buffy mod allows us to verify replays (which are allowed for game crashes which you should report by PM to the mapmaker = me).
