[BTS] News: BOTM 297: Kublai Khan, Prince - Starts October 15

Slightly off-topic, I was trying to submit one of the old games (deadline today), but the link for submitting them is not working properly. Not a big problem as it is an unfinished game, but just wanted to let you know...

Just for the record - I've fixed this issue. Thanks @Conquistador 63 for giving me very precise info via PM to help me track down the problem. (Turned out it wasn't an issue with the submissions system itself: The problem was a link on the GOTM Home page that was going to the wrong place - just to catch people out  )

Crossposting in old Buffy thread too - if somebody could help me please ... I am trying to get BOTM Windows version to run on my Mac, I tried Whisky but could not even install Steam, but CrossOver (Paid) seems to work great except Buffy ;( - I am getting the same message as others (not available for HoF and botm, but if I choose OK, it actually works except I can't open even old bottom saves ... I tried everything, manually giving write permission to everybody (I always had it), move it to the top directory of drive C, force running as admin in wine - the only thing I achieved it started to freeze or crash - so trying to reinstall now ...

The Steam version requires running the game using the "Beta version" of Civ4BtS in order to make it compatible with BUFFY mod. Not sure if CrossOver allows you to do that, but I wish you luck.

I wanted to give this a spin, but I can't seem to find the Buffy mod in any other form than an .exe file, and I'm running Linux Mint. Any advice?

edit: I run civ4 through Steam.

Unfortunately

Hi! Unfortunately we don't support any format other than Windows - due to a combination of, there's never really been sufficient demand to justify the extra work involved, plus we lack the ability to make starting save files in non-Windows formats :-(

There is a Mac version of BUFFY, but I'm not aware of there ever having been a Linux version (I have to admit I hadn't even been aware that it was possible to play Civ on Linux!). The best advice I can give is, if you have a Windows emulator within your Linux environment, to run it in that. Sorry, that's probably not very helpful :(

Out of interest, did you have any luck trying it with the beta version of Civ on Steam?

Hmm.

I run civ4 with Proton on steam. Have not had any issues. I currently use the BUG mod, and installed it by unpacking it to the /mods folder, then load in game, no hassle.

How many files are changed with the Buffy .exe file? Is it possible to just make the /Mods/Buffy folder avaliable, or does Buffy require additional files in other folders? My steam install has the same folder structure as Windows Civ4, I think.

In principle, yes it's possible to make the folder structure available. However, the problem is likely to be that BUFFY includes a new version of CvGameCoreDLL.dll - which is one of the compiled library files run by the game (compiled = contains executable code, not Python source code - because it replaces a non-Python part of the game code) - and I'm guessing that Linux will not be able to load and run Windows dlls.

The Buffy installer makes a number of changes to enable competitive features so unfortunately just sharing the folder structure wouldn't work. A full emulator like Virtual Box should enable you to play it perfectly well, I guess Proton gives you less control.

I did! and it worked pretty well, although tend to crash often - bt than my less than 1 year laptop died! and I lost all data ;( - so civ-less again but will probably try again with cross over (had a free version) or would simply get a windows computer - huge disadvantages of using such complicated solutions to run BOTM it is it never occurred to me that the problems might not be related to me doing it on Mac! and IA kept telling me to install this library or this dependency, sigh ... but yeah, the problem seems solvable, so I'll be back :D
