BOTM 301: Santa Victoria of England.

Welcome to Civ 4 Game of the Month - BOTM 301. These games allow new and old GOTM fans to play Civ 4 single-player in a friendly competitive environment. For each game, everyone starts with the same map and starting save, and you play to see if you can get a better result than everyone else!

Did you know it's Christmas coming up? Well if you didn't you do now. Yes, time for Santa Claus Santa Victoria to make his her appearance to bring gifts and goodies to the World. And since Christmas is a time to be merry and jolly, and not a time to be alone, Ragnar has come along to your starting spot to say 'hi'. Just remember it's Christmas and don't start fighting before you've at least settled your capitals! In fact, to try to avoid Christmas descending into inappropriate early fisticuffs, I've made sure there is no copper or iron within reasonable early reach of your starting area. To help you decide where to settle, you start with an extra scout as well as your warrier. Since this is monarch level, Ragnar has an archer and a scout.

YOU CANNOT SETTLE ON OASIS. Therefore you and Ragnar will both have to move your settlers before you can settle. You take your turn first so if you choose to settle on the first turn, you get first choice of starting spot. Remember that oasis uses 2 turns of movement, so if you move either the settler or scout to an oasis, they won't be able to move any further that turn.

I've fiddled with the AI starting techs. Ragnar starts with fishing and hunting, other AI start with two random base techs. Noone starts with mysticism. By the way, there are rumours of an area full of goodies somewhere near the South Pole.

You play as Santa Victoria of England, on Monarch difficulty, against 6 AIs and with this start (click the image to see a bigger version):

Unique Building: Stock Exchange (replaces Bank)
The stock exchange gives an amazing +65% gold in the city it's built in, as opposed to +50% for the bank.

New to GOTM? How to get set up for the game
To play the game, you must have Civ4 Beyond the Sword installed and patched to 3.19. You also need to have installed the HOF/BUFFY mod version BUFFY, which you can get here. You can only play on Windows. There's detailed info about getting set up and playing the competition game in this newbies guide.

Rules while playing...
Our cardinal rule is that MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying. If we detect that you've broken these rules, we'll reject your competition entry.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads..

Adventurer and Challenger games:
As an alternative, for the GOTM competitions, we often (but not always) provide an easier 'adventurer' and a harder 'challenger' saves.
For this game:
  • Adventurer: Sorry, no adventurer save this time.
  • Challenger: Sorry, no challenger save this time.
The newbies guide has a full explanation of adventurer and challenger.

stone looks good but rag will settle IBT E or W, so that is a problem....edit: ah no way he can settle anywhere W IBT, if we choose stone.

Such a christmas treat to have Rags in our face

You know it's Christmas when the BOTM starting screenshot has icy floodplains :xmascheers:

I'm leaning towards settling at T0: 1W or 1SW. 1NE could be interesting if it means that Ragnar is pushed further away to the east, but I don't know for sure if this would be the case. I believe that the AI will not attack without having a strategic resource like copper, iron or horses. So peace may reign for quite a while.

+1 to @Frederiksberg. Now I’m dreaming of a white Christmas…

Arboria is a small 40x40 map. Polar arboria, who knows? At least it comes populated with Antartica…but does it have a tropical equator? Shouldn’t take long for our scout to find out.

As for the south pole goodies, the settings say no goody huts…

Settling on the stone speeds everything up a bit and instant access to stone with masonry but that 2f4h1c tile is also tempting.

Assuming Rags will settle turn 0 IBT he would have 1t culture on us if we move to stone. Considering no one starts with Myst, while not optimal, an early reli may help here. Might be able to get one even with hunting first which will have a small bonus from rags.

Just suddenly thought I should mention. With all the floodplains around, remember to think about health when you are deciding where to settle. I'd hate for anyone to forget and nerf themselves from the start by settling in an unhealthy spot.

The unimproved floodplains deer (!) already guarantees a T12 worker with SIP, so settling on stone only speeds it up by 1 turn. Since this tundra floodplains hill stone (!!) happens to be food neutral, basically the yields of a grass river copper, I am tempted to work it too. Early masonry seems reasonable given that it's a land-heavy map and we know we don't have metal to defend from the barbs.

I would move the scout on stone on turn 0 anyway just to check our options.

Keep in mind any improvement will take a lot of time here. 6 turns for an ice cottage or camp, 8 turns for a tundra quarry.

Pretty sure improvements take even longer on the ice floodplains but I’m away from my computer, can’t verify…

Going for an early stone wonder almost necessitates settling on the stone.

My main fear on settling Stone Mtn on T1 is Ragnar settling 1n T0 and dominating the fur tile. 😳
Wow. If Ragnar settles 1n he also dominates both oases, doesn’t he? And are those oases 3f4c for us since they’re on a river?

Guess I’m the only one who hasn’t started… Can’t start tillJan 2.

Yes, that is an important point! I remember one game of the month where I made that mistake.
