    Yep, and hope the barbarians kill the mongols.

    This is good! So, they won't just harass us to death from the beginning. If we can successfully run away and regroup; maybe the nasty mongols will settle down and we can get some common war goodwill.

    Great Plains Maps
    West: mountains, silver, gold, sheep, uranium, aluminum, dry, barbarians
    East: forests, corn, marble more likely
    Southeast: a bit of ocean, some jungles, forest
    Center: plains, horses, cows, wheat

    I trust that the mapmaker has made all directions equally viable, so we are probably in the center. What resources do we want? Horses or forests? Marble? Head in that direction. Or opposite direction from mongols.

    from the SS I would assume we are more east then west, near middle, but not too much, the jungle tiles tell me we are more south then north, unless kdc was so cruel and added some forests and jungles himself :)

    going east is imo better prospect, there usually are at least 2 AI's, but can be 3

    this is going to be a very exciting start.

    Also, all your troops can't go one way or the other unless the mongols put themselves in a bad position. Although I suspect a mongol/spearman battle will start off the game

    That is definitely an innovative idea for a game! :goodjob:

    I dread to think how the 'where everyone settled' map script is going to cope with this one after the game has finished ;)

    :lol: It's gonna be a very interesting early game.

    My bet is huts... but it's a just a bet :) very early barb city only if the mapmaker placed one nearby

    Are you sure - I thought Warlord was the highest level you can pop a Settler.

    Can't be worse than half the players settling on the northern edge, and the other half settling on the southern edge. :mischief:

    You are probably right, its been a while since I popped a settler.

    Honestly, I don't think I've ever popped a settler from a hut.

    You obviously don't play at low enough levels :crazyeye:

    Spoiler Civ4HandicapInfo.xml :

    As far as I can see the value "Settler" controls how many Settlers you can pop:-

    Settler - 2
    Chieftain - 2
    Warlord - 1
    Noble up - 0

    Hut-popping possibilities here... http://civilization.wikia.com/wiki/Native_village_(Civ4) No settlers or workers, and no techs until we get a city.

    I've re-thought the opening. We don't want to slow ourselves down by killing the barb spearmen. We'll just send 3 of the keshiks in one direction (NW for example). The 2 spearmen there will die when they try to attack us after our go is done. As for the 4th keshik, well good luck to him, he'll be roaming the map, popping huts etc.

    Would it be better to avoid the spearmen, on the basis that if we leave all the spearmen in place, the Mongols are likely to lose a couple of their keshiks to them? (I'm not sure if the AI gets free barb wins too, but even if they do get two free wins, they could still lose two keshiks).

    I think the AI also get 2 free battles against barbs.

    One thing you might want to consider is that even though the risk of defeat is essentially zero on the first two battles, your unit receives the same amount of experience as if it were a fair battle that you won by RNG - the bigger the unit you kill, the more XP you earn.:scan:

    Yes, the AI gets 2 free wins because the AI is always set to Noble. On deity, they are still noble, but you are deity. Pretty messed up categorizing...

    KCD, that's very creative setup. I can't wait to play it!

    So, I wouldn't think of it myself, but thanks to all the wisdom I gained from this thread, I'm gonna to:
    move Stalin to S hill;
    move NE Keshik to E hill;
    join Stalin with SE Keshik
    sent NW Keshik looking for huts via N or W hill (I suppose N);
    Join Stalin's stack with E Keshik;
    hunt for 2 spears, preferably on forest;
    move Stalin and his copanions in a city-seeking stack;

    Killing any spear in a first turn is suicide proposition, as any Keshik, who would do this, would be also in a killing range of Mongols

    It's also just occurred to me that attacking any of the barbarian spears on T0 would be extremely risky, because with the spears standing in pairs, any keshik that attacks will be unable to get more than two tiles away from the Mongol keshiks on T0. If
    Genghis decides to attack that Russian keshik, then with four keshiks against one, it's all but certain we'd end up a keshik down.

    Can the mapmaker change the value of the settler popping from a hut? Or is that a no-no...

    BTW: Very inventive start, I hope I survive!
