    BOTM 51: Brazil

    Game Details:

You will play as Joao II of Brazil. For centuries Brazil has lived in the shadow of Portugal. No longer. It is your task to fully realise the awesome potential of Brazil.

Since this is kcd's botm, I will include a little in game sampo gauntlet, with fabulous prizes!

Sampo Challenge: The player who builds Christo Redentor with the earliest in-game date wins!

    Game settings:
    Civilization: Joao II of Brazil
    Rivals: 4 AIs
    Difficulty: Immortal
    Map: Medium and Small
    Mapsize: Small
    Starting Era: Ancient
    Speed: Normal
Options: No Random Events, No huts.
    Victory Conditions: All enabled

    Joao II of Brazil (Portugal):
You are Imperialistic and Expansive, and start with Mining and Fishing.

The Imperialistic trait gives you Great General emergence increased 100 percent. 50% faster production of Settlers.
The Expansive trait gives you +2 health per city, double production speed of Granary and Harbor, 25% faster production of Workers.

    Unique unit: Carrack (replaces Caravel)
The Carrack can carry 2 units across open ocean, before Astronomy. It can also explore rival territory w/o triggering war, just like a normal Caravel.

Unique building: Feitoria (replaces Customs House)
The Feitora provides +100% commerce from intercontinental foreign trade routes and +1 commerce on water tiles. It can only be built in a coastal city.

Thanks for the great starting spot!

Settle in place and work to get a second city out ASAP! My even build Settler after 1-2 WB's.

EDIT: Just remembered the 50% bonus on settlers only applies to hammers and not food overage. :( Maybe a settler out of the gate or wait to size 3 when you can work 2 clams and a forest.:hmm:

SIP definitely. TGL is doable even for me ;)
But masters, advise about scouting strategy. Scout by WB? Sailing asap and galleys? What would you do o Big-Scores and Fast-Winners?

    Immortal, ack!

The bonus doesn't apply to food overages, but it does apply to whipping. And with this starting spot, whipping will be done early and often.

Get out those Workboats while researching BW and find that metal quickly. Hopefully, Copper is 2S of the Settler, but that may be asking for too much considering what's already in the BFC.

I have a question about the Gold tile.

Is just getting Sailing enough to get the happiness from the Gold, or do you need to hook it up by road? Obviously, getting a road around to that tile is going to be a pain, and on Immortal, happiness is a high priority.

The gold will need a road since it is on the same landmass; unless there is a mountain placed in between. But it look to be forests along the way.

Does this mean it is time to get back to the Suri game> :crazyeye:

It seems it is connected, but in case no, you can always built a fortress in the south tile and connect it by road to the gold mine. Fortresses act as cities for sea trade rutes.

Oh yes! This looks like a great game!

I'am sure the capital will be whipped a lot and TGL is probably the killer wonder here.

Btw, my usual level of play is Monarch. At this point Im probably ready to move on to emperor as I do not have a hard time winning but now this game is Immortal.

I never played immortal. To those more used to playing BOTM, would you recommend me to use the Adventurer class start?

    Welcome to BOTM MaxWar. :wavey:

Immortal is no picnic, so if you are not used to higher levels, definitely take the adventurer save.

I played several Immortal (and even more Deity) games before I got my first win. Good Luck!

Hmmm not sure I'm going to have a chance to improve those pigs for a bit, I forsee the wheel, BW and sailing coming first before thinking about AH, what do you guys think?

Thinking I'll get workboats to size 2 if not size 3 here. Lighthouse will be early for the +1 food on the three clams, plus it's needed for GLH of course.

Thanks for the advice neilmeister :)

    Wheel and BW seems priority.
I would expect to build 3 FB, a couple warriors, a settler and a couple workers before I build a LH. If i can research all the said 4 techs before im done building all this early stuff i would consider getting AH before sailing, but that will depend on the timing. Im just not good enough to calculate all this in advance :p

I have missed the back-story. Can someone fill me in on the significance of the "Sampo challenge", or point me to the right link?

    Thanks.

I tend to research AH early because I think it makes sense to have a worker out early for the gold (faster research, +1 Happiness with TW). And the improved pig is a 6F tile compared to the 4F calm tiles (without a lighthouse).

Yep, the start gives me a headache ... :)

I attached a test game; the capital is already settled; the western land is a bit different but I think it will do the job to test your early micromanagement of the start.

2 continents and 4 AIs: Alphabet doesn't seem to be a priority, even if it should normally be in an Immortal game.

    BW is high priority.

I did a bit of testing, and am leaning towards Sailing-BW-Wheel (to connect gold) as my first 3 techs. Already having mining, this gives the worker plenty to keep him busy (Gold+roads+chops) so that I have been putting of AH in my testing so far. Unless there is a way for city two to share some of the food, it looks to me like AH is useless in the BC's given the happy cap (Of course, knowing where Horses are could counter that, especially if an early rush is in the cards.)
