Civilization VI - Game of the Month 9

Welcome to the 9th game in the 6OTM Series! These games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out the new features in Civ6 in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. We will be working to refine the 6otM concept as we move ahead with the series.

Must Read!
We would like to ask you to abide by our most sacred rule: Don’t replay any turns! If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to 1 turn. In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous save and play it as closely to how you played it the first time. Please let Leif know (via Conversation (Private Message)) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Information about threads associated with each individual 6otM -- Must Read if you are new to our Game of the Month!
Spoiler :
Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Once you have opened the save, DO NOT POST in the Announcement thread, even non game-related information. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread: This thread is used to discuss the game's opening decisions and strategies through the first 100 or so turns. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. We encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshot. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date and final score (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

Results and Congratulations thread: We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). We will issue medals to the top 3 winners (based on earliest date finished). There are no long-term records kept for these results, they are just given out to top finishers to reward their efforts.

It's been a while I've been wanting to try Spain out. Guess a GotM is as good a opportunity as any.

This starting location is begging for either Dance of the Aurora or Stone Circles. I'd settle in place, and settle a 2nd city on the coast to the west. Will try tomorrow.

Doesn't get much better than that for a starting location - The capital is going to be a powerhouse.

Imagine starting with 5 stone... I had that a while ago with Poland (and even playing a mod where districts grant bonuses to resources... with Holy Sites giving bonus faith to stone. 5 stone tiles with each 5 faith).

Anyway, not entirely sure about settling in place with a second city on the coast. Crossing the river (but next to the mountain) might be better, as otherwise you might get in trouble for your second city, with what we can (kinda) see of the coast. At least it appears that, if you settle in place, your second city won't have fresh water from the river.

Very low diffilcuty level but I understand. Game for everyone :)

Emperor is still pretty high. I mean, Prince is supposed to be standard, right? I know the AI isn't exactly brilliant and everything, but I think there's quite a few people around that would call this a pretty high difficulty. (I myself play it when using mods, I'd probably go Immortal without mods)

Are you looking at another picture than me ?
This would have been a good start in previous civ games where it was all about food sure. Pretty meh in civ6 though.

I kinda disagree. At least there's some farmland south of the river, but depending on what's in the fog to the northeast... If there's a bunch of hills over there (and mostly if you cross the river like I proposed), you'd get both a huge amount of food and a huge amount of production. On top of that you have a huge spike to size three: First you take the sugar, then the sheep, then the plains/hill/forest. 9f4p from three tiles. Means you still have 7 surplus, so you'll grow more within a few turns, and well, I'd argue that by then the start can't really go wrong anymore.

I actually really wanna try this game, and I got holiday next week anyways... Guess I know what I'm spending my time on after finishing my Germany Culture victory (a lot of over-sea colonization included as well as a strategic war to get another coastal city so I get to the empty islands much faster).

I've had some starts like that with Poland too. I imagine Poland has a stone bias? :p

I think the current medium level is King. Emperor is kinda mid-high level.

Still it's kinda good. I'd say it'd be a bad start if we had only 3 of these resources, but a freaking 8 resources within the second ring is powerful no matter what they are. Especially Stone in a religious game; those might not be good otherwise, but with Sotne Circles it's 2 food, 2 production and 2 faith in a single tile.

I like to open a game with three slingers and a builder. However, this seems like a good game to try a double scout opening. Early scouting could lead you to find a Natural Wonder or a Goody Hut for the Astrology Boost. First to CS Envoy Bonus with Faith CSes. Or even the discovery of terrain that would help decide which pantheon to start with.

Any tips or strategies for moving those scouts that could pay off dividends in a religion game ? For example using the settler lens to "divine" where a nearby CS is ? What are the best terrain to search for a Natural Wonder ? Where are Goody Huts most often located ? Or is it just best because of Civ VI movement rules to stick to flat terrain, to open as much of the fog as fast as possible ?

I guess it could be a little better for luxuries and production but still 7 visible resources - I'll take it.

So where do you all see placing the holy site? If we don't take "Stone Circles" I would think that we should harvest the stone to the SE and place the site there (especially if it can be timed right to boost building the HS itself). But it sounds like some people are considering that Pantheon - so where do you build the HS?

Although I doubt it will lead to the fastest victory, I am really interested in trying out the Conquistadors' unique ability. Is it an exploit to Return (as opposed to Gift/Sell) a converted city as part of a peace deal?

I haven't played a religious game so I'm thinking convert with the sword. Build warriors to fog bust tundra while holding off on iron working, eventually upgrade to conquistadors and forcibly convert the other continent. Religious units to convert one civ (remember not to capture the capital) on the home continent.

I'm thinking on settling NE - get away from the tundra and it looks like there are cliffs and an estuary to the west. I'll send the warrior NW to expose a few more tiles before deciding. This site puts the sheep, forest hills and sugar in the first ring and gives a site SE of the sheep in the second ring for a holy site. This is largely a bet that the continent center and more hills are beyond the sheep.
