Congrats to everyone!
I did the conquest using knights and Lanzelot used horses. As soon as I saw his post in the spoiler thread I knew his conquest would be faster.
I faced exactly 1 pike in the entire game. The French were the only ones to get Feudalism and built 1 pike before I cut their iron. So clearly going for horses was the better decision.
