News: GOTM 19 Pre-game Discussion

Tally Ho. The game is afoot.

Good luck to all.

just curious, how much harder is immortal level in WOTM 7 than emperor level this GoTM 19, or maybe in general? 2 times, 3 times, or the difficulty from doable to impossible?

The shift in difficulty is experienced differently depending on what level your are comfortable playing. It also depends on if you are used to the map type. You also need to play differently in higher levels, and there is less room for mistakes.

If you look at the bonuses & penalties, immortal is generally ~20% harder than emperor (the AI has +10% bonuses and the player has -10% penalties).

I would guess that the contender save in GOTM19 is roughly comparable to the adventure save in WOTM7. We will know in a couple of weeks

isn't the health limit for empror 1? then wouldent that mean that you'd start running into health problems when growing to size 2 unless you can hook up the cows. so then skipping AH doesn't only mean that you miss the food, but you also stop your city from growing

Settling on a fresh water tile (i.e., next to the lake) gives you a permanent +2:health:. Settling with some forests in the city cross also can give you +:health: depending on how many forest tiles.

Excellent. Looking forward to the warfare. Think I will probably aim for an early axe rush just to stay alive, then tech for alpha to try and keep up with some of the emperor AIs, and aim for a long term military win in the moden era.

I will be happy just to post a win on this one (I think it would probably be a first for an emperor level map of this size).

yes, so if you settle in place you'll have 3:health: after settler chopping, and if you move west in hope for food resources you'll have 1:health: after tree chopping until you hook up cows etc. also there is a lot of nice forest to the west, that could give you a good bonus proguction in the early game to chop some more settlers/oricle/axe men etc. while moving west in hope for resources will mean you'll lose some of that forest chopping benefit. hmm, weighing up the extra early hammers Vs having more growth potential in the city. i some fish/food resources to the west will mean you can work all those hills, while settling in place will give you extra chops, extra health, but in the long run you'd have to farm the grasland just to be able to work some of those hills.

maybe a faster start settling in place, and using the extra forest chops and fresh water health, but possibly a better long term city by moving west if there are fish/food resources.

I started to play adventurer, but then realized, that I should not use it any more, so I won't submit that GOTM. ...

And again: DO NOT IN ANY WAY DISCUSS THE GAME IN PRE-GAME THREAD AFTER YOU'VE BEGUN TO PLAY. Any game results might hint about the maps characteristics/difficulty/etc.

Sorry for the harsh tone, but this was made clear earlier even in this very thread.

Hi folks. I know I said I was done with Civ4 for a while, but this interesting GOTM tempted me back--at least for this one GOTM. I can't let this be the beginning of more obsession. But I can squeeze in one GOTM without getting addicted again, can't I?

Well, anyway, I already started my game...

Good for you!

I don't know... Is that like "Just one drink" ...??

;) Good to see you back

Hello everyone!

I am new here, but have been lurking since months. I allready played Civ from the very beginning (see avatar), but I learnt a lot from you fanatics here in the forums :)

This GOTM looks very interesting and I'm going to give it a try, although I dont know if I can finish and submit it. But here are my thoughts on how to get a good start and how to utilize best the UU and traits of Mao:

He is philo, so a specialist economy supported by massive lightbulbing techs seems an appropriate approach. I also will try to build the pyramids for two reasons: First it obviously helps the SE a lot with +3 science bonus when running representation. Second the GE points it delivers are very interesting - the first two great persons will be Engineers who lightbulb - yes! Metal Casting and then Machinery. The second GE will be supported by an Engineer specialist (will whip forge). So chokos should be avaible for me relatively early (Archery and IW I will try to trade) I only hope that there are not to much industrial civs around ... Stone is probably not so rare on rocky maps? But we dont need it, massive chopping will also do.

So, this my plan: research BW, Wheel, AH (for cows) then Masonry for the pyramids after that Pottery (to unlock MC) and the usually path Writing-->Alpha-->Lit (to get the GLib too :))

Besides this plan for the economy, i will try to steal workers from nearby civs and will build several warrior first for this purpose, then a settler then the mids! After the emergence of chokos the world should prepare getting conquered fast and without mercy

So what do you experts think?
Looking forward reading the first spoiler, anyone uo for a cultural victory?

Hello, and welcome to GOTM.
Yes, this is a great place to learn. There have already been many good tips in these forums.

That sounds like it would be a good general strategy for many games. GOTM is generally tailored, with each map often requiring different totally strategies. The thing I’ve learnt in GOTM is that it’s best to change strategy depending on the circumstances.

In this game the prevailing pre-known circumstances are:
-8AI (unusually crowded)
-Aggressive IA (they’ll pick on the weakest target, so you need a military not to become that target)
-Emperor difficulty (the AI get a huge production advantage, so if you want a wonder you’ll have to prioritize it above everything else)
-Rocky world (lots of hammers, (the AI will be producing fast) and not so much grassland for cottages.

So the stats make it look like this could be a fairly aggressive game!
What difficulty are you used to playing? It’s generally much harder to get wonders on harder difficulties. And you’ll need some defense with all those aggressive AI. So keep that in mind when going for pyramids, as you don’t want to be caught with your pants down.

I look forward to hearing how it goes.

The fun thing about GOTM is that everyone will try a different strategy. So some people will go for certain wonders, and others will go for different strategies, and then we can all learn from the sharing of experiences in the forums.

I've now reached Emperor difficulty after some good victories on Monarch - so this GOTM is perfect for me :goodjob:

And of course I will also adopt my strategy to circumstances. But I hope to finish the pyramids around 1000BC, before that time the AI rarely declares war, they are just busied expanding and: my neighbors get their workers stolen plus I research the early resource techs BW and AH, so that I can pillage the right things  my 2nd city will concentrate on military builds (hopefully with the help of copper or horse) So it is me being the aggressive guy in the first place!
