Will you manage to become a Japanese Deity...?

In this game, you will rule as Shogun Tokugawa over the Japanese, who are Religious and Militaristic and start the game with the knowledge of Ceremonial Burial and The Wheel. This is a Deity-level game, adapted for general playability. The Japanese Unique Unit is the Samurai, a Knight with stronger defense statistics and no need for Horses. Nevertheless, Horsemen can be upgraded to Samurai.

This game was created by Più Freddo.

  • You start with an extra Worker
  • You know Pottery
  • India starts with an extra Scout
  • India starts with 60 gold
  • One tile is roaded

Apart from the normal Rule Changes for the GOTM, in this game,
  • Forests can be cut in four turns

I created this game with a particular, perhaps at this level unexpected, victory condition in mind, which I also play tested. Can you figure it out?

Well, here´s my guess:
Ruling out Dom and Con victories, as they are never "unexpected".
Rule out 20k... as this does not look like a start for it.
Science games also do not make a lot of sense, as they are neither too uncommon nor do they require anything but just a good start. Which would be there... but it is not very specific.
And since I would not assume that you think of a game that goes up to 2050 as a desirable VC - I vote for 100k! :)

Looks like a 100k to me as well - cheap deforestation could speed up churning out settlers/temples. Current top finish of 1080 AD looks to be beatable, but need good domination limit and layout of the world.

5 scientific civs also are handy for a scientific victory.

Because there's no coast in sight, and no hills for where the settler starts?

There exist 12 tiles 2 shield tiles in the radius of the spot of the initial settler. That's 25 shields per turn if the settler doesn't move anywhere in despotism before corruption. This does look like a 20k game to me. I even have a #2 entry in the HoF, I think, which has no hills or mountains also, and since I used the 2nd city, it might have similar levels of corruption to GOTM.

Alright, maybe know the author better than I do.

I won´t argue with that at all. Sure not at all a bad 20k start!
Only my feeling does not go that way, when Piu says "I created this game with a particular, perhaps at this level unexpected, victory condition in mind"...

Whatever happened to the famous fog gazers of this forum!? Take a closer look!

I guess that's not a spoiler for this game.

But, I don't know how many times I've anticipated coast when fog-gazing and then later found a lake. Maybe I lack some sort of perceptual acuity, but I do know that lakes and coasts have seemed indistinguishable until I've known their surrounding tiles.

Though, I definitely didn't fog gaze in the above.

Looks good for either type of culture victory. Religious for early cheap temples plus militaristic for great leaders that can rush wonders in ptw.

Hello all. Please accept my sincere apologies for having failed to set up the xOTM server for this game and GOTM 169 on 1st October. Thanks to più_freddo, Blake00, and leif erikson for your efforts to cover for my delay.

I have now set up the server to provide the information and files . I have set the closing date to 31 December. If players believe it should be 7th January, please let me know.

Please enjoy the game.

i did find some time to play this out before year´s end craziness takes over!
i took only minimal notes, but this is how it transpired:
440ad conquest
F score 12601

some few more details...
-played settler first, churning it out 3500 bc
-started to explore for the other continent 825 bc
-bc 670 i met the others
-610 Koreans built TGLight, which turned out very important for this game; know 1st tier MA techs
-590 all embassies
-430 ignite GA
-270 war against India starts
-230 finally sees first MGL, many more to follow
-190 start to set up the 2nd core
-110 conquest of other continent starts
-30 GA ends
AD times:
-ad 90 India out
-310 war against everyone
-340 Greeks out
-400 Babs out, Rome to go last

...and thoughts:
-built my first PtW armies in ages, only to learn again why I never build them usually - they are shockingly useless ;) later MGLs rushed buildings or single Samurai units
-no more own research after the 1st tier MA techs, relying on Samurais only
-during the final turns, i had prepared and changed the ship chaining from the west to the NE of our continent, which brought my troops directly to the heart of Roman lands
-i wanted to go for a ConDom victory, but without CA one does not see when you hit the dom limit in PtW, so I dropped that idea and just stay visibly within any limits for all of the game, surely razing more towns and thus giving up more land than necessary.
-instigating war amongst the AS went exceptionally well, and I managed to keep my rep intact for a very long time for this purpose

thanks for setting this game up! for my taste, it never really felt like a PtW Deity game, the AS starts on our own continent being really really poor. hope this will get a few more players their Deity victory under their belts, it sure was a good day to seize it!
