GOTM 86: Waterloo

My my
At Waterloo Napoleon did NOT surrender (well not this time anyway)

You play this game with Napoleon, and I do not imagine anyone will be surrendering.

We haven't had a little side challenge for a while, so special mentions will go to all players that capture Waterloo by the time of their victory!

Game settings:

Civilization: France (Leader: Napoleon; Traits: Aggressive, Industrious)
Rivals: 6 AIs
Difficulty: Prince
Map: Custom Continents
Mapsize: Standard
Climate: Temperate
Starting Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
Options: ALL Goody Huts removed.
Victory Conditions: all enabled

Napoleon:
Napoleon is Aggressive and Industrious; starting with The Wheel and Agriculture.

Your Aggressive trait gives free Combat I promotion to Melee & Gunpowder units and double production speed of Barracks & Drydock.
Your Industrious trait gives you +50% Wonder production and double production speed of Forge.

Unique unit: Musketeer (replaces Musketman)
A Musketeer is a Musketman that receives an additional movement point. It requires Gunpowder to build.

Submit the save after your victory (or defeat) here, by 1 February 2013.

Macintosh: This game MUST be played in Civilization 4 (NOT Warlords), patched to version 1.74, and with the Mac HOF mod version 1.74.002 installed. You can download the HOF mod here.

While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of the game outside those threads while it is in progress.

Please write here or send me a Private Message for any technical queries, eg. if you have trouble opening the game. Do NOT post in this thread once you have successfully opened the starting save.

I am definitely moving the settler north. No sure exactly where to, but maybe 2N1W to start. Opens a lot of settling possibilities for T1 depending on what the warrior reveals.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I sense tundra to the south, and those coastal tiles don't seem all that delicious.

going north sounds good to me too, tundra is pretty useless and I'm not a fan of watery caps. I'm not great at fog gazing though, but is 2N2W a desert? What could that mean in terms of what we will find? Is this map going to be really dry?

2N2W is a desert, it seems, and outside of the starting city cross... so there's probably nothing on it, uselessly.

The water in the screenshot is a fresh water lake (2:food:), can't even build a lighthouse where the settler starts.

Good catch. Make that starting location ultra-useless then. Into the mystery desert!

Also, to be clear, I don't think there's any tundra in the starting cross, but lower down there is. The tile I thought was tundra is probably a plains.

Waterloo took place in Belgium according to Wikipedia.

I'm more intrigued by "capturing Waterloo".
Does this mean a new supercity of Belgians defended by Machine Guns?

Lighthouses aren't necessary where fresh water gives the same food total as coast WITH a lighthouse. (Not that I'm going to settle in place...)

IF the map maker wants to follow history, shall we expect to see; England, Russia, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal, and Germany...

Problem is that the 2 food 2 commerce is what you're stuck with and can never get upgraded, whereas you progress through the game, you'll want cottages and farms.

Fresh water lakes are good for when you can build a lighthouse so that they provide 3 food, giving you a net gain. Coastal tiles are good simply for the fact that you have access to the ocean and can build sea units.

But in general, even with a city surrounded by coastal (or non-lighthoused lakes) tiles, even as financial, you're still better off working grasslands with cottages first until you have nowhere else to work but the coast. And even then, by the time you get there, you're probably out of happiness/food/health and are shifting the excess to specialists.

2SW from settler looks like tundra. But what I'd like to know (and won't until i download the save 1.1.2012, I'll be needing that time machine again, but at least it's 13 months time to play until 1.2.2013) is if that's a lake or sea 1N of the northeastern cow, which is of course clear once we see if that cow has fresh water to drink. If it's not a lake I might be tempted to get a coastal capital. We are industrious after all and custom continents sounds like we may have some coast to enjoy the GLH or Colossus. This is Prince level, might as well build all wonders and leave the other civs none (like I could manage that even on prince, it must be time to  and keep on dreaming...)
:hmm: Why are the resource bubbles off, could it be they show us to be due north of the equator and that icy lake is some trick by the never-to-be-completely-trusted-mapmaker? Or sleep deprivation is making me (more) paranoid... :shifty:

Oh yes, the game will indeed start in 2013 not 2012.

Resource bubbles are off simply because I forgot.... sorry.

You've convinced me, we should move the capital.
I thought settle in place because there will be a strategic resource in our BFC.
And I like (maybe I shouldn't) coastal capitals for the trade routes and to build ships. We will need ships becaause this is a continents map. How many continents? Probably 3 or 4; so we are isolated or semi-isolated. But the lake doesn't give us access to the ocean. Move inland and put second city on a good coastal location.

I don't see the lakes as much of a problem for settling in place. There's only 4 of them in the BFC, so won't really impact the city until it hits size 16. A more serious problem for me is lack of food. The two cows are quite good as combined food-production tiles but I'd really prefer one or two specific food tiles. On the other hand, there's no indication that moving is likely to improve the situation :(

You guys are maybe getting used to be being spoilt. ;)

Yup.
Games o' the month seem to have more resources than my other games.
But I only play xOTM, so I don't know what I'm comparing them to. :mischief:
