Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 154
    \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the 154th game in the GOTM V Training Series! This Series will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.

    Must Read!
    Civ V BNW - TSG154 Details:
    Zulu Unique Attributes:

    Spoiler :
UA: Iklwa - Melee units cost 50% less maintenance. All units require 25% less experience to earn their next promotion.

UU: Impi - Specialized in defeating Knights and other mounted units. Only the Zulu may build it. Also performs a first-strike ranged attack before combat.

UB: Ikanda - Unique Zulu Barracks replacement. Grants unique promotions to pre-gunpowder melee units.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with each individual TSG -- Must Read if you are new to our Game of the Month!
    Spoiler :
Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Once you have opened the save, DO NOT POST in the Announcement thread, even non game-related information. Instead use the next thread.

After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

Results and Congratulations thread: We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). We will issue medals to the top 3 winners (based on earliest date finished). There are no long-term records kept for these results, they are just given out to top finishers to reward their efforts.

    File Upload System
We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends April 1st, 2017.

First off, apologies for getting this up a day late. Real life was busier than I expected this week.

Secondly, this is the first GotM where we are doing away with the Opening Actions thread. Participation is low and the intermediate OA thread is seldom used these days, so instead just include a post-game write-up if you wish to describe your efforts.

Thanks and I hope this game lets you get a little aggression out in a Zulu Domination game. And you are starting right at Medieval era so all you have to do is tech Civil Service and start the Impi swarms. Good luck!

Looks like an interesting one. I've never played Zulu where I didn't start in the ancient era. That means 3 spears that don't get "buffalo" promotions. Maybe they can just take rough terrain promotions and/or be the home guard (since they won't be able to keep up with the swarm)

Raging barbs. Good; I have a lot of aggression to deal with after that Maya game. ;)

The Medieval start might let me do something with Impi, but my favorite thing about Zulu is everything starting with three promotions.

Settling beside the oasis is okay if it's a river tile so the waterwheel can be built. Here Petra is an immediate option with a medieval start but it delays the military buildup. Production, money and growth were both slow in my practice games.

The north settler is better for everything except food. I don't see any iron or horses so one of the settlers should find those. Only one of the three spearmen can move two tiles at first so exploring could be slow.

An oval map is surrounded by ocean. Settling or capturing a port could matter at some point.

The main thing though is that impis have to be paid. Getting the worker going on the gold mine is a start, and being the first to find city-states will help. Finding city-states first and capturing barb camps both build up money. Caravans are vulnerable but I don't see a sizeable army surviving without them. That's another reason for a port with cargo ships.

The three opening policies could be Honor, with Piety to get tithe and Tradition to boost culture. All the spearmen can be upgraded to impis so the Honor upgrade discount would help.

The wonder I want is Hanging Gardens. All that said, plans often go out the window after the moving starts. These games always have surprises.

Personally I doubt I'll go after any wonders or open anything besides liberty. In games like these, my plan is to drop 2 cities, get a free 3rd settler from liberties, and immediately tech to whatever military tech(s) I need to win the game. In this case it will be machinery and civil service, probably in that order. Some very minimal infrastructure will likely be necessary before it's time to spam military. I'm thinking granaries, libraries, caravans, workshops at most.
