SGOTM 05 - Barbaric Mongolians

Sign up here to join a Succession Team for a new Vanilla SGOTM.

You are Temujin, Leader of the Mongolian Hordes. You have tired of fighting the Barbarians, and so this time you have decided to join them instead. You will win a glorious victory in this Monarch game, of course, but you are teamed with the Barbarians, and you have to adapt to Barbarian assets and liabilities:

  • You have no starting techs.
  • The barbs are your friends, and are fighting on your team.
  • You will benefit from the Barbarian capability to explore the world in animal and human form.
  • You can research, but you will also learn techs that the Barbarians learn.
  • .... And you start off at war with everyone on the planet except the Barbarians. You can make peace with anyone.

The Objective
This Monarch difficulty game is on a Standard size, Gyathaar-special map, at Epic speed, against 7 rivals. All victory conditions are enabled (For Conquest - see notes), and the laurels for this contest will be awarded to the teams who achieve the earliest victory date in the game.

Versions
This game will be played in Civilization IV version 1.61, using HoF Mod 1.61.011.

Mac players are welcome, but they must form one or more separate teams, as the HoF Mod cannot be made to work cross-platform. They will use Mac HoF Mod 1.61.011.

The game will start on July 19th.

Please post in this thread if you wish to join a team and take part in the competition. The information required to place you in a suitable team is as follows:-

  1. Which level (noble, monarch, etc.) are you comfortable playing in a solo game?
  2. Have you played any Civ4 GOTM games before?
  3. Have you played any succession games or SGOTM before?
  4. Do you have a group of players you want to play with?

Starting Position
Here's the starting position - click the image below to see a larger version.

Characteristics - Expansive, aggressive.
Unique Unit - Keshik (Horse archer)
Rivals - 7: China, Japan, India, Arabia, Spain, Persia and Greece
World size - Standard
Difficulty - Monarch
Landform - Special, sort of a fractal archipelago.
Environment - Temperate climate, medium sea level
Game Speed - Epic
AI Aggression - Normal
Barbarians - Raging, and teamed with the Mongols
Permanent Alliances - Not Enabled
City Razing - Enabled

Notes
  • Please visit the Civ4 SGOTM reference thread to check out the rules and procedures to ensure that you are adequately prepared for this game.
  • Teams will compete for up to four awards - the Gold, Silver and Bronze Laurels for the fastest finishes, and the Wooden Spoons for the lowest scoring finisher. The number of awards will depend on the number of teams.
  • All teams must play the sponsored variant - awards will be given to teams who achieve victories in the least turns.
  • All saved game files uploaded to the server are parsed through software that extracts and archives data about your save, including reload count for each turn set.
  • CONQUEST: The Barbarians are not allowed to win by Conquest, so this victory condition is not detected by the game. If you do achieve the destruction of all the other Civs, you will need to inform us of that so that you can be credited with that victory condition manually.
  • Spoiler information will absolutely NOT be tolerated in this thread.

Please sign up for this game NOW, and learn what it's like to be a C-IV Barbarian.

Первыйнах!

Hoorray, Urda!

1. Emperor
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. CFR or CRC - depends on whether we can field two Hordes :D
Edit: CRC it is as we do seem to field two Hordes after all. The World Team assembled by Big Pig looks intimidating (BP, LtC, Erkon, Gnejs, jesusin, Murky, JERFit - get yourself klarius, DaviddesJ and CactusPete and you've sucked the transfer market dry :D )

1. Noble I think. :hmm:
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. Team Smurkz FTW! :D

Do you mean teamed in the manner of a permanent alliance? Although, I suppose there is no barbarian leader to negotiate with! So I suppose we can't direct the research of the barbs (like one can direct research in a PA). But similar in other respects?

If we make peace with a civ, then are the barbs at peace with that civ as well? There is an odd concept! :crazyeye:

If barbs make good allies (who knows?), then this game might be too easy (assuming you can survive the first few turns being at war) ... unless the opponents are teamed in pairs from the start of the game! Is that the nasty surprise awaiting us?

1. As David suggests, I'd quite like to be able to find the sign-ups in this thread. Was this a sign-up, or just fog of war?

2. Why must there always be nasty surprises?

I've opened a pre-game discussion thread for those who want to ask questions about the game and discuss it in public before the start.

OOPS! Sorry about the clutter. Feel free to remove it. But this is so unusual, some vehicle for clarification might be useful ... or not, if you are feeling sinister :mwaha:

Edit: done already: how efficient! :goodjob:
