news: WOTM 14 Pre-Game Discussion

If you settle on the sugar and build settler straight away, he's built on Turn 21. If you settle him on the other sugar or a plains/hill, you could have two more settlers ~20 turns laters. That 4 cities before 2000 bc. Use one for the stone and clams... (Disclaimer: I'm not recommending this choice...)

I Tried this in a couple of test games, and settling on the sugar still had Settlers taking 30 turns. Am I missing something?

Oh immortal for a beginner like me :(

The way you guys are speaking it's really making me worry. Happily it's on normal speed which is what I've been playing for the last few months, when I tried the last GOTM the epic speed completely confused me and my build orders were all wrong.

I've been trying to learn the warmonger strat (unsuccessfully) but I think this time I'm going to try be everyones friend. Speaking like a true "youth" to me it's obvious they are trying to get you to go for cultural or diplomatic, I think in my case diplomatic will be easier.

Um, my strategy as usual is mixed, if I didn't read what any of you said I probably would have tried to found as many religions as possible, but maybe alpha is better?

Argh I don't know, suppose I should just play and see what happens. What's the worst that can happen?

You get so engrossed in the game that you forget you promised to pick your daughter up from school today. She gets the bus to her friends house instead, and is in such a temper about it and not concentrating that she accidentally sets the microwave to 30 minutes instead of 3 minutes. The resulting fire destroys her friend's house, kills her friend and leaves her badly injured. The policemen who come round your house later on to tell you to go to the hospital would've been on duty in the town centre if they hadn't been called away to visit you. Where they would've spotted the suicide bomber acting suspiciously and been able to stop him, except they were too busy banging on your door. The bomb was a huge dirty bomb that released radiation forcing the evacuation of the town centre and killing thousands of people.

Meanwhile the doctors were so busy performing emergency surgery on your daughter that they weren't able to treat the next patient in time. Unfortunately the next patient, a victim of a car accident while fleeing from the town centre, was a scientist who was on the verge of discovering a cure for AIDS. His death, that would have been averted had sufficient doctors been available, means that millions more people will die of AIDS over the next few decades.

Meanwhile, the Government, forced by overwhelming public anger at the growing nuclear catastrophe in your town, overreacts and bombs Tehran, after suspicions point the finger at Iran for training the bombers. It turns out that Iran already has nuclear weapons, and launches a retaliatory nuclear attack. The situation escalates and billions of people die in the resultant nuclear war, all because you got too engrossed in playing WOTM14.

Oh, and an immortal-level AI declares war on you in 300AD, and already has such a technical advantage that you suffer a humiliating conquest defeat.

Being protective with stone means I will be building lots of walls and castles with archers. I fear that balanced resources are to give our aggressive neighbors the power to unleash a flood of ancient and medieval era UUs. Barbarians might be aggressive.

I am going to settle in place, research fishing, one religion, and then archery. With luck Damascas will be a double holy city.
