I know there were all sorts of newspaper announcements in Civ1 DOS. (Like, "England destroyed by the Germans" or "Civil Unrest. Mayor flees in fear.")

Were they also in Civ1 Windows version?

Were they in Civ2?

When were they stopped, as I really loved them? I don't think I have seen them in Civ3.

Yes, they were in CivWin. No, they were not in Civ2. That one had the council that often gave funny suggestions and quotes.

Can anyone provide a list of the Civilization 1 newspaper headlines please? I couldn't find it and I felt unworthy to create a new thread. 2006 isn't that bad of a necro for a forum dedicated to a game from 1991.

From memory, there are several types of newspapers:

1) those linked to wonders which effect are limited in time :
- discover X nullifies effect of Wonder Y

-> religion nullifies Oracle
-> university nullifies Great Library
-> invention nullifies Hanging Gardens
-> magnetism nullifies Lighthouse
-> gunpowder nullifies Great Wall
-> electricity nullifies Colossus
-> communism nullifies both Great Pyramids and Michelangelo chapel
-> automobile nullifies Copernic's Observatory
-> nuclear fission nullifies Isaac Newton College
-> electronics nullifies Shakespeare Theatre

2) those appearing when you change governement
- "Revolution! People of civilization X demand a new governement"

3) Those when the "We Love The King Day" comes to an end in a city:
- " 'We Love The King' Day cancelled in city X"

4) Those linked to the end of the game
- "President/King/Mr./Comrade X says he'll retire in 20 years"
- "Dynasty of X retires after Y years of glorious reign"
- "Your civilization conquered the whole planet!"
- "Spaceship of civilization X lands on Alpha Centauri"

5) Manahattan project is the sole wonder to get a newspaper when it appears
- "Test of nuclear weapon detected near city X" (where the Manhattan project is built).

I think this is pretty much all...

6) Ah! I just remembered one that maybe few people know:
You also get a newspaper when you build a palace in a city:
"Capital of civilization X moved to city Y"

Hrrm perhaps I was thinking of something else. Thank you for the detailed response.

The reason I asked was I saw Civ 1 (DOS) retro/pixelart theme in the Community Art Project and thought it would be cool if the banner had rotating versions that would have all the real news stories Civ I used, but like ones unrelated to what is happening in that game (especially the humorous ones). I dunno if they'd even use that idea but it wouldn't be hard to just write some historical headlines for it instead.

Anyways, thanks again.

Yeah that's actually perfect Mize. I'm gonna quote your post all the way from the bottom of the forums at Civ1 to the top of the forums at Community Art Project. : P

No need to do that. If you're looking for other texts the game and the Civilopedia display, basically all of them are stored in the several .txt files in the Civ folder.

Yeah... that'd be great if I still had Civ I. Technically all I've done so far is see the thread somebody else made for the banner, and link the quote somebody else (you) made for the suggestion. If/when the Banner comes to realization I plan to take full credit as one of the great middlemen in history.

Speaking of changing headlines, anyone notice the new link to Next Civ iteration - Ideas and Suggestions now in Civ1 - Civ4? Not quite what I asked for but once again I'm gonna take credit for it. ; )
