Economically, the EU is already mightier than the US by a fair degree, and is better insulated against shocks.

This is not technically a true statement. The EU is composed of 27 countries all with differing economic policies, regulations, etc. While technically their GDP is larger than the US when combined, their economy is nowhere near as fully integrated EU-wide as it could be or compared to the integration in the 50 states that compose the US.

Further, the EU is just as vulnerable to shocks in the economy as every other industrialized country. Several of the EU member states have immigration issues, several are undergoing a housing price decline, and others, like France, just have problems
