Next Turn - 120 AD

I think I've asked that question myself before and, iirc, was told all settlers from huts are NONE.

Duke, I too am concerned we have wide open spaces with no units in near known AI's. Whilst Queen I did do a sweep along the coast and mountains NW of LC with the archer. I was also sending the Reneaux horseman to the NE corner (Next Turn - 60AD thread) where we now know there is Viking activity, but it appears to now be going the other way.

Nope. All settlers from huts (nomads) are NONE's. Now, if another unit came out of a hut as a NONE, then it would be correct.

I, too, question building one city on the new island. We can fit two cities on that island, each taking one of the specials, and make better use of all the available land, I think. Further exploration of the land just SE might clear this up a bit before we decide for sure on city placement.

Er, I agree completely. The People have been so in favor of building a few large cities, I had forgotten to consider what I think is right. In this case, why not build right on the Buffalo? There is no overlap, all ocean is utilized, it is 4 squares from Civvium.

I have great concern about Little Nemo building a third Settler, but founding this one right NOW alleviates that concern. Or, we choose to wait and explore, then let's redirect LN to build a Caravan; that would work fine.

I stopped where I did mainly to hear this very discussion. I definitely want to explore more with the trireme and its units before founding a city.

Generally, I envision island cities more as big trade producers, not necessarily so much for unit production. Needed units would be sufficient defense from barbs (where are they?) and perhaps trireme(s). Growth would require a temple, trade routes, library, marketplace, and a harbor (Seafaring) as a minimum. I'm presuming we wish to head for republic in the not too distant future ....

I'm also very happy to hear more discussion on the Northlands. For example, I didn't know the horseman was headed NE.

As far as I'm concerned, the more that gets pointed out, the better. I'd prefer to have guidance rather than relying too much on executive decisions. I want to do the best job I can.

If two cities are built, the resulting low productivity due to the ocean would hold us back from comleting improvements etc.
This would not be as much of a problem on the mainland, but this island will become the hub from which the next foray of exploration (god this is wordy!) will extend from.

Short Term; Each city should have enough land tiles to do what all of our other cities are doing right now. So far, we can only get cities up to what, about 3 or 4 workers?, so that is all the land we need for now.

Long Term; As MonkE said, these cities main function should be to generate trade, which will provide us with money and science. In return for their selfless work, they will of course be rewarded with occasional rush builds of main improvements. :)

Possible build sites:
1)The forest NW of the buffalo. It overlaps only 1 sea square with Civvium. BFL is a filler anyway, so does that overlap matter much? This leaves room for another city on the island (with some overlap).
2)Forest NE of the buffalo. This uses almost all the land squares without overlap of Aonia. Another city on the unexplored land could use the whale and the last forest square.

Or Island Site #3, on the Buffalo. This is instant productivity. It permits Belfont Lakes to become huge, stealing all squares from Little Nemo but defering to Civvium.

I have the impression LN should change to a caravan, we'll use that anyway for Mike's, and it gives these Settlers time to explore and think. Also, we may be ready to move by tomorrow.

LN supplies Salt and Wool, demanded by LC and Civvium. We would rehome in RC or Elysium, of course, or save for a wonder. The Silk option looks a bit wild to me at this time.

I don't think I've ever built a city on top of a special. Does the city square get the same food/shields/trade as the special?

Yep, sure does. It gets the usual free irrigation/shield, as well as the usual instant use of any new tech we get (i.e. farmland, railroads).

Sorry, I had to cut my post short, so it may not have made too much sense before I edited it. :)

I am prepared to move tomorrow. Before I do, I would like to see consensus on the island build site (Buffalo vs. a forest square hasn't been discussed much). If the cabinet or governors need more time for good cause, I'm willing to wait a day.

Maybe move Tuesday, maybe Wednesday. Summary of Polls:

REGIA CIVITAS Build - the easiest poll - please vote.
Exploration and Expansion - discussion of Trireme and Island.
also above, Island City Sites discussed everywhere!
Aonia Settlers - complex poll, interrelates with Island City
Chryshe - complex discussion of Roskilde & Viking Menace
needs skirmish, scouting and war plans.
Long Term Science - you have probably already voted.

New City Proposals 175BC - Rout's Chryshe Map.
Civil Disorder - discussion of Black Dudes and city size.

We still need a Boreum Governor - I have mentioned (above) founding another Filler. If I were the Boreum Governor, you already know what I'd recommend. Someone, please stop me! I can't help it! Really!

Caravan Priority Poll - no hurry, vote in a few days.

I'd prefer to know what is on the other side of the narrow strait from this island under consideration before choosing where to put a city on the island. If the "other side" is lush and fertile and (maybe) boasts a special or two then I'd have no hesitation in grabbing that land first and then maybe building a settler to send back to this new island. :goodjob:
Essentially, I'm pushing for a wait-and-see strategy, much beloved of politicians, with the caveat that we build tonnes of caravans quickly! :)

Since viewpoints are shifting rapidly in the discussions and CivGeneral hasn't reported on the military situation, and as it is Election Day here, I would like to delay game play until Wednesday.

There is low turnout in the polls, hopefully more will speak out.
