I just can't wrap my mind around that logic. I've read it three times, and it still doesn't make sense to me.

But then, it doesn't really matter or not.

The timing really sucks tho. A coach coming in late, and having to rush to catch up.

Didn't Marty try and do the commentary thing after leaving Washington?

It basically sounds like they didn't have 100% faith in Marty (as show by the joke of an extension they offered) and were going to count on the two cooridinators to carry the team. When they left, the Chargers had no confidence that Marty could do the job by himself (and his new hires).

It seems like they figured, 'why wait and be screwed again next year, let's just clean house now and start fresh'.

    Yeah, that makes more sense.

My kid thinks he'll end up in Miami.

The pundits have to be more original and stop putting Pete Carroll on every NFL coaching search (first Raiders, Dolphins, and now some mentioning Chargers).

Expecting pundits (and fans, for that matter) to be original is expecting
a lot. I got ripped on another board for suggesting that the
Chargers go with someone like Rivera or Norm Chow.

Rivera runs a 46 defense, Chow sounds nice especially considering his ability in teaching young quaterbacks. And his ability in teaching young quaterbacks named Phillip Rivers.

Who knows who that egomaniac AJ Smith will go after. He inherited Brees & Tomlinson, he is lucky it's not him being showed the door. Don't sit on your laurels yet Dean Spanos & AJ Smith, Schottenheimer turned around a perennially losing franchise...not you guys.

I think "egomaniac" rather hits the nail on the head. The one quality Smith is looking for in the next coach is utter submission on the subject of personnel (and maybe in general).
