NHL Playoffs discussion and predictions.

Which team is going to win Stanley Cup this year?

I hope it will be Flyers

But probably it will be western team. Maybe Detroit or Dallas... :mischief:

JJP, we'll have the playoff pool again this year. Make sure to come by.

Ottawa.

EDIT: oh, what the hell, we might as well get the pool going in this thread.

In all rounds, picking the winner of a series with the right number of games lands you 1 bonus point. Picking the winner of a series yields: 2pts in the first round, 3pts in the quarterfinals, 4pts in the semifinals and 5pts in the finals.

Make the picks in this thread at least 30 minutes before the start of the first game of the series.

(see The Pool from the Last Go-Round)

I pomise I'll stick around until the end, this year. Also, if anybody has other suggestions...

SuBI, don't forget you also need to give me series lengths for the East.

EDIT: I see by your editing date that you posted before that was settled. sorry

Im in !! oHHHHHHHHH yessssssssssssssss im in !

Detroit/Edmonton. How many more times will the Oilers struggle valiantly into the playoffs only to get their asses handed to them by Western giants? At least, it's not the Stars. The Oilers will win one at Northlands (make that Rexall Place). But that's it. Another year, another wasted opportunity for Chris Pronger. Wings in 5.

Dallas/Colorado. The Stars are personified by the 30-something goal scoring of Jason Arnott. Seriously, did you know he had that many? Underrated. A good way to go into the dance. The Avs, on the other hand, are putting their hopes on The Rogaine Man. Which goaltender are they getting? The Vezina winner? Or the man at the receiving hand of an 8-2 drubbing in the deciding game of the series against Carolina? The latter, I'd wager. Stars in 6.

Calgary/Anaheim. You know what I want? I want the Sens to win the Stanley Cup over the Flames in 7 games. Unfortunately, the Flames are not going to hold their end of the bargain because they will lose a heartbreaker (and the best series in the first round) to Anaheim. It's sad, but that's the way it is. I'm sorry. Ducks in 7.

Nashville/San Jose. No Vokoun, no win. Has anybody else noticed that Tie Domi and Barry Trotz were separated at birth? Cheechoo in 5.

Ottawa/Tampa Bay. Do you remember where you were the day they announced that Ottawa (not Hamilton) and Tampa Bay (Tampa Bay?) had been awarded NHL franchises? At the time I was rooting for the Winnipeg Jets. The thing that strikes me about the defending champions is that they suck. The Sens would have had a tough time against Toronto, Atlanta and Montreal in the first round. But thanks to Mike Fisher and Dany Heatley's 50th goal (happening as we speak!) at MSG, Carolina tanking it against Buffalo and Tampa Bay not showing up against Washington, it won't matter if they meet the Habs in the second. By then, Emery will have a playoff series victory under his belt. Sens in 5.

Carolina/Montreal. Way to blow into the postseason for both of those teams... How, oh how can Bob Gainey consider starting Aebisher over Huet? Did I read this properly? Come on, Bobby! It's no contest. If Aebisher starts, the no-name Hurricanes over the no-name Canadians in 7. If Huet starts, Habs in 6.

New Jersey/New York (Rangers). The Blueshirts are weak. They are soft. This team has no hope. They're playing against Martin Brodeur. Martin freakin' Brodeur. Devils in 6.

Buffalo/Philadelphia. My girlfriend's father is a Flyers fan. He's obnoxious. I don't want to disrespect Philly, but he's really annoying. Sabres in 6? Flyers in 7? I have no clue. Forsberg, Gagne... Dumont, Drury... Flyers in 7. Nah, it would kill me if they won. Sabres in 7.

======================================================================
* DISCLAIMER: on average, I get about a third of these rights. If you are the wagering type, stay away from my predictions. Ask SuBI instead.

Det/edm: Det(4) Detroit hasn't lost in about 13? games so....
Dal/Col: Dal(7) Col will put a good effort.. in vain
Cgy/Ana Ana(7) Ana is on fire, their gonna have a hard time against Kipper
Nas/SJ SJ(6) Thornton/cheechoo will close this one
Ott/TB Ott(6) Ott in 6..... i was gonna say 4 but WTF
Car/Mtl Mtl(7) MTL!!!!! ok I'm biased for this one
NJ/NYR NJ(5) After kicking MTL's ass tonight I see em going far
Buf/Phi Buf(6) I go with Buffalo and their best season in franchise history

So in an official form:

Buffalo/New Jersey. I remember a series in the late 80s/early 90s, when the Sabres and the Devils played an ungodly ammount of overtime, back when they had those really swift uniforms: the blue/white/gold of Buffalo and the red/green of Newark. At the time, Montreal and Boston got all the publicity in my neck of the woods, but they often switched to their games after Montreals beat the Bruins. Why the pointless history? The truth is, I don't know about this series. The Sabres were surprisingly good this year. The Devils have Martin Brodeur. Devils in 6?

Philadelphia/New York (Rangers). The Blueshirts are weak. They are soft. This team has no hope. Flyers in 5.

uhh. actually Philadelphia is gonna finish 3rd and NJ 6th....

So its Phi/NJ and Buf/NYR ;)

Edit: Actually NJ just scored in late third... not done yet
Edit2: Elias added an other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tied game
Edit3: Well I'll be damned........

I had prepared a bunch of handy scenarios, just in case. And then all hell broke loose. And speaking of hell: quand on parle du diable... Holy Devils!

Detroit/Edmonton. - Edmonchuk in 6. I still have some hope in me left to spare

Dallas/Colorado. Colorado in 7. I've just got a feeling...

Calgary/Anaheim. Calgary in 6. I still can't accept that other team with their stupid name.

Nashville/San Jose. San Jose in 7. No real reason, had to pick one.

Ottawa/Tampa Bay. Ottawa in 5, even they can't choke THAT badly.

Carolina/Montreal. Carolina in 6. I'd rather it was 4, but it'll have to be 6.

New Jersey/New York (Rangers). Devils in 5. Rangers are and always will be crap.

Buffalo/Philadelphia. Ugh, can't they BOTH lose (as they did in civic appearance)? Philly in 7.

Well, the Habs lost again tonight, in a horrible fashion this time letting the Devils coming back from a three goal deficit to secure the first place in their division. So I'm in no mood. I take my hockey way too serioulsy.
That being said, here are my picks for this year's playoffs:

Ottawa Vs. Tampa Bay
John Grahame. I could stop right there.
The thing is, TB are still defending champs, they can still hold their own. I could see the series going their way if the likes of Richards, Lecavalier, St-Louis, Prospal, Modin and Fedotenko decide to come out swinging. Their offensive is scary. There's a slim chance of TB stealing this one, but I don't truly believe it. Ottawa is the real deal.

Sens in 6

Carolina Vs. Montréal
Carolina kicked the Habs ass all around Québec and North Carolina this season. But now that Theo is out of town and Erik Cole a.k.a Habs killer is out of the portrait, everything's possible. Carolina's defense is not as good as Montréal's, but their offense is a lot better. The goalies, both having career-years, don't have any playoffs experience. Anything's possible. My heart is with Les Canadiens (the team, definitely not the poster).

Canes in 7

New Jersey Vs. New York
The Devils are on fire and really hard to beat these days. You read about these "peak at the right moment" or "peak too soon" things a lot, but it all sounds rubbish to me. They are playing great hovkey right now, they will beat the Rangers.

Devils in 6

Buffalo Vs. Philly
The Sabres had an excellent and suprizing season. Just take a look at our rpedictions at the beginning of the year, we all had them out of the playoffs. They are fast and talented. The Flyers are a playoff enigma to me. Some years, like last year, they are an inspired team looking like serious contenders, then the next they go out fast and easy. Keith Primeau's absence will hurt them a lot. Floppa is not 100%. Hard to say. Buffalo is one of those organization on the rise that will loose some series before really becoming powerhouses.

Flyers in 7

Detroit Vs. Edmonton
I really like the Oilers, always did. Once again they have a great young fast team, and Chris Freaking Pronger. I still have my doubts about Roloson though. I voted Detroit for the Cup, so...

Red Wings in 6

Dallas Vs. Colorado
I have a thing for Colorado since the Nordiques moved there. All of my freinds are going with Dallas, must pundits say the Stars are too good, that Theo will fail. I say f*ck the Stars. Arnott is a douche who actually came out and said that he was having better stats this year because his contract was up at the end of the season. Theo is going to bounce back and Sakic will keep on being a playoff warrior.

Avs in 7

Calgary Vs. Anaheim
Hard to say. I mean, ...Anaheim? I just don't see it. Hopefully Calgary will loose in the second round.

Flames in 5

Nashville Vs. San Jose
No Vokoun, no Sullivan, no chance. Don't count on Thonrton to win it for the Sharks, he's hasn't been a big playoff guy in Boston. Then again, the Preds are not the Habs.

Sharks in 6

here are my choices for the series .... Im at work so ill edit and explain my choices later today!

East

Ottawa vs Tampa bay --- 6 games
Ottawa is a no brainer, Tampa gave all they had before the playoff so no steam left.

Carolina vs Montreal --- 5 games
Even with Huet in nets, Carolina is just too strong for the ''non-scoring habs''

New Jersey vs New york --- 6 games
New York, no explanation just New York

Buffalo vs Philadelphia --- 6 games
Buffalo is going in the stanley cup finals so they need to go through the first round. Best team all around the year

West

Detroit vs Edmonton --- 5 games
Detroit is in a class of its own, Edmonton hummmmmmm dont know much but Eh!

Dallas vs Colorado --- 7 games
Dallas is a personnal vendetta choice, I dont want to see Theodore win

Calgary vs Anaheim --- 6 games
Calgary is going to be in the western finals, even if Anaheim is on fire well calgary is better

Nashville vs San Jose --- 5 games
San Jose is going to be the big suprise this year!
