Has anyone else ever thought it was weird that gold coins are used as wealth in Civ 3 even before anyone researches Currency?

...for that matter, everyone still uses the gold standard after Banking, after Corporations give rise to Stock Exchanges, and even after the Internet is born ("everyone plz send gold coins to help me buy a new computer, I need 400 of them, thx")!
