They want to run with the bulls. That and I think they have a thing for whats her face from the last game...I forgot her name....if it was an important country I am sure I would remember it. Oh well. Viva le revolution!

Because at the bottom of the Firaxis Civilization 5 page you get to choose your country:

USA Germany Italy France and SPAIN

Spain can make the top 5, but not get a civ???

Well, you got the Latins (aka The Romans) who colonized and conquered Spain. They are your true Spaniards. Techincally speaking the Romans would be the French too, and hell for that matter a good portion of the English people. So many Europeans are descended Romans and don't even realize it.

Today's Italians are nothing like the original Romans since it was inundated by immigration from Middle Easterners and North Africans back in the day which led Rome to its downfall.

Spain wasn't important in World History.

Yeah but....... When you DO choose your "country" on that page, all that happens is that the language on the website changes, that list is pretty much just for what language you want to view the website in, not what country-template the site should have (as i also first thought, i thought each country had its own flash-interactive junk etc).

Is petoria home of Pedobear?

Spain... aren't those the [Family Friendly Guys] who hate Freedom & Democracy (TM) ?

They won the World Cup already. You can't have all the nice things at once, OK?

Italians are much more closely linked to Rome than Spaniards, or 'lationos'. Italians are original Latins, and the closest to Romans.

On a more serious note. I think the reason they didn't include Spain is because Spain of today simply does not represent the era of Grande y Felicísima Armada. Just like how the modern Italy does not represent ancient Rome.

Not according to the writings of ancient historians such as Plutarch, Livy, Tacitus, and even Cicero. It is well documented that Rome became majority non-roman due to slavery and immigration. Towards the end of the empire the majority of the Roman army were non-Romans and lacked discipline and ingenuity. Todays Italians are mostly descended from the middle east and north africa especially a lot of Jewish immigrants. I would say that the people who are most closely related to the original Romans are those of France and England due to Roman colonization. Spain was also inundated by north African immigration.

You have to expect the game will only ship with so many civs. Something has to be left out. It will be ok!

Fear not. There will be DLC. I would guess Spain will be amongst the first you can pay extra to have. Maybe they'll be in the first 2 civ DLC pack and I (and other D2D preorder folks) will get them for free.

-> And Hitler founded the U.S.A. in the same year Elizabeth I. claimed the japanese throne... <-
riiight? ;) ok too much exaggerating isn't good...

I don't want to give history lesson, but almost all you've wrote is wrong.

Romans "romaniced" the spanish lands, as they did with southern England, France, western Germany etc... no need for details, but this means they mixed themselves up with the local inhabitants and "teached" them their culture at first. Later the "barbarians" gained the upper hand with their migration, that's around when the dark ages started.

But for Spain:
Spain was first "colonized" by a few greek and mostly more carthage colonies. (Barcelona > Hannibal Barcas family :x ) Then came the romans, mixing this "barbarian, greek, carthage" people up with their own culture.
Later east european tribes rushed through spain and some settled there (mostly goths), until the african people invaded it and managed to hold it's southern half for almost a thousand years before the medieval spanish people took it back with their "conquista".

So, sure, modern Spain has something to do with romans, but it's one of the most "mixed" up people we got in Europe.
Roman, greek, carthagian/phoenician, african, slavic and even celtic people.

Edit: PS: Yup, as an historian it's sometimes funny to see how this country with it's multicultural background could develop some of the most intolerant groups in history.
