Nobles' Club 387: De Gaulle of France

Played a little bit of this one on deity. It seems like a pretty easy map as far as deity maps go. T90

Spoiler :

The start is a bit slow, but I went for one quick settler to block (in between WB builds), built the GLH, and then back-filled the peninsula with 4 more cities. IIRC, terra is basically a smaller pangaea and can be won by conquering the old continent and ignoring the new one. I'm 4T from Construction (already have HBR) and, if i play this one out, the plan will obviously be to crush somebody with cats and elephants. The only major obstacle here would be Charlie getting PRO LBs early which is certainly possible because most of these guys like each other and seem to be teching and trading freely. Charlie's on 7 or 8 cities so he won't be a total pushover. If that happens I'll probably just go for Willem first because he's really weak.

I'd say SIP. the hill 2E of settler orphans a fish, doesn't gain worker turns, claims eastern land, but maybe there's more up north. maybe 1s to gain a river cottage, but thats not of immediate consideration. maybe grow to size 2 on the oasis, whip workboats. Very slow start, but got to get a handle of one of those some day. maybe TGL gaming if expansion is possible. otherwise slow opening and straight for construction

Spoiler played a bit. a good one :
charly gifted alphabet!!!
SIP BW opening. size 2 settler working whatever and chopping. self teched archery as a mistake, but thought I needed it
Spoiler have to replay a bit :
took a detour from cuirs pat to wipe willem. Waste of turns. Now the stack is ready, but charly has rifles on the near horizon. Will replay at a later date

Why was this map chosen?
Spoiler :

I asekd someone else to confirm a spoiler question for me.

Spoiler :
What's the point of playing a Terra map if there are no unique resources on the other wise? There's no excitement and reward. No rare spices and exotic animals.

Spoiler :
I thought there were? That is how Terra maps are supposed to generate without me needing to edit them, though maybe I didn't look closely enough. It's hard to spot every instance of a resource from the global map view.

I'm not a regular on this series, but had some time on my hands and gave it a go. Played it to the end, on Emperor.
Spoiler :

SIP, REX to 8 cities.
Went for WvO, then Charlie and finally SB.
Would go for Conquest, but accepted an AP Religious victory (I wasn't even the one who called the election :mischief:).

Thanks for hosting it!

Enjoying this map on Immortal, it opens lots of possibilities (depending on tech / resource trades & AI DoW time), especially for wonder-building.

My early research path:

* Fishing + Animal Husbandry (order doesn't matter - Worker will be ready no sooner) - need extra Hummers for WorkBoats...
* Mining + Bronze Working to start chopping
* Mysticism - 2nd & 3rd cities can build Monument from start to fight Culture, they basically blocks AIs' expansion to West
* Pottery + Writing - for later Cottages & Library in the capital & to strengthen Culture pressure in 2nd & 3rd city against AIs.
* Hunting - for Happy Elephant.
* Mathematics - to trade for Iron Working (here is a sad moment of missing Iron)
* half-tech Alphabet to afford together with Mathematics, opening trades for Sailing (no needs for foreign roads) + Polytheism (get closer to Monarchy!)
* Currency - it is a milestone I always pursue - now research rate could inflame
* Priesthood
* Bought: Calendar, Monotheism, Monarchy
* Aesthetics, Literature, Music - to win free Artist. Kept monopoly for wonderbuilding.
* Bought: Metal Casting, Meditation
* Code of Laws + Civil Service - in preparation for Golden Age civics change
* Bulbed Philosophy for Pacifism Golden Age

Lack of Iron is sharp, Civil Service's Maceman & Construction's Elephant is a way to wage war.

Early Calendar trade + Music path & trade Copper for Marble secured me 3 wonders: GLib, Parth, MoM. Later I failgolded some wonders, till owner DoWed me.

The Marble is 1 tile away of my borders, I thought I capture it, especially I secured monopoly for Nationalism / Taj but my spent much resources on city / wonder building, with minimum Warrior army, being under constant invasion threat. The Marble owner themselves, HolyRoman, DoWed me.

Pumping Axes took all the time and I lose Taj Mahal, as I didn't wont to build it without 100% bonus (even we are Industrious, I had OrgRel + Forge). I regret missing Taj.

I destroyed 3 waves of HolyRoman, replaying a bit - I did'nt wait they smash against my city, instead I proactively wiped them and straight attack turned out suicidal. Instead I need to soften stacks with 1-2 Catapults first. I could defent only I city so I didn't want AI chooses a target - I wiped stacks as they entered borders.

My initial build sequence:

* worker
* 2 work boats
* 2 warriors (city size 5) - they effectively fogbust upcoming 2 cities
* chopped worker
* chopped 2 settlers - now I secured my patch of land

I played with 5 workers / 7 cities and felt I need 2 more workers but was busy wonderbuilding + needed fe axes to capture Barb city and scary off nearby AIs.

I won Liberalism and Econimics races but due to the prolonged war (collecting enough Cata/Trebush) I expect to lose Phisics race.

HolyRoman's Landsknetch 100% against Mounted / Melee is fudging hard to counter, I don't have Iron for Crossbowman, maybe I had to resort to Longbowman? HolyRoman was vassaled, I'm thinking about next research & AI targets ))

We talked about it in this thread. @Lennier suggested the FP might only reduce distance maintenance, without eliminating colonial maintenance.

Post in thread 'Colonization to another Continent'
After astronomy, I settle one cities on top of each unique resource and then grant independence. The large numbers of units arrive as I finish researching communism.

Even with communism, various maintenance costs will skyrocket and your technology will stagnate for a long time (until you suddenly become very scary).
