Here he is, in all his fake wig glory, Steady Freddy!

We chose a leader who can play the SE strongly, since many of us want to learn the nuances of that style, and Freddy meets that requirement. There is also the fact that he was in 2 of the first 3 NC games and was stomped by most in both. The KK game was particularly hard on poor Fred, seems everyone made him their first-target whipping-boy.

So here we go, a chance to prove Fred can hang with the big dogs! First, our fearless leader, and his traits and starting techs!

And our starting position, this time, without knowing the Map in advance:

There are no hard and fast rules here, fun and learning are our primary goals, but we do request that you update your progress at various points in the game, using the Spoiler feature of the boards. We also request that as you progress, you link back to your earlier posts for that game, so that folks can see how you progressed through the ages (if you need help with how to do that, ask, its really simple once you know how, a great example of the technique is here, by Refar).

Tentative posting updates are suggested at:

4000 BC (starting thoughts, no spoiler required for that discussion)
2000 BC or so (how you decided to progress up the early tech/build paths, which AIs you have met, etc)
1 AD or so (after establishing some cities and a possible plan of action)
1000 AD or so (mid-game, Lib race, wars or peace, or whichever happened or didnt, met other continent if applicable, etc)
1500 AD (or when you have decided on a course of action and a specific victory condition)
End of game (Victory!!! or defeat, no shame in losing, especially if you tried a higher level. Learning is what we focus on, not fastest win or biggest empire)

Remember, these are only guidelines. What we really want are your thoughts as the game goes on, so if your strats dont fall into line with those dates, feel free to adjust your reports accordingly.

We also welcome players to ask for specific game advice, as we have a number or stronger players who lurk and help out with solid tips, and of course, we help each other. Replies to specific questions should also be in spoilers, with a simple "@" in front of the person the answer is directed towards.

Once again, special recognition goes out to r_rolo1, our Map Maker, who sets these up for us (so I can play without peeking, heh, the WB needs to be modified) and also to Krick19, who came up with the idea of running a series like this for the less confident players. It is our goal to get folks to play and post without feeling self-conscious about being a "n00b" or asking dumb things. There are NO stupid questions! Learning this game is a process, not an event.

The WB-save is attached (zipped, they are bigger than standard saves). To play, simply download and unzip it into your BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Start the game, and load your favorite MOD (if you use one, if not, I suggest checking out the HoF MOD), select "Play Scenario", and look for "NC IV Frederick".This allows you to play with your favorite MOD at the Level and Speed of your choice. From Quick Warlord to Marathon Prince, all are welcome! We stuck with the name "Nobles Club" because it has a cool ring to it :goodjob:

    Prince/Marathon, woot.

I played a few Prince games, and I realized that my axerush will be harder to pull off. Let's see who my neighbors are. Might have to actually PLAN where I place my cities this time, haha.

A seafood start! And we don't have calendar resources across a tiny body of water that we'll probably not bother with for thousands of years!

I'll be settling in place most likely, though I'll probably be moving that scout onto the hill first (assuming it starts there for me...these scenarios have the non-settler spawning in different places).

I know this is the nobles club, but are you guys cool with reports even if I bump it to monarch? I kind of want a last "hurrah" at monarch before I attempting a jump to consistent emperor (my probable suicide attempt at immortals U this weekend notwithstanding). A SE leader (which is still a soft spot in my game) might be just what I need, although organized will probably help me quite a bit...

If not, I'll just shadow it and post tips, but I like doing the occasional write-up :).

    Lol

I can't believe we got a seafood start! That thread I started may pay off after all!!! Except we don't start with fishing :(

But apart from that, there are lots of nice forrests to chop and looks like 4 hills in the BFC. I'm thinking it might be best to tech bronze before fishing while building a worker then chop out fishing boats. Can't see any reason to move.

I'll probably run a fairly typical scientist/bulbing SE here I'm thinking. Early wonders will probably be as standard for me, oracle/mids/Glib but I will have to wait until I see a bit more of the map!

Even though its too early to say, I'm probably looking at a space race win as I've never kept an SE going through the late game I always end up converting to cottages.

    I'm sticking to Prince/Epic

PS - Can't see a problem if you want to play Monarch Meinteam.

    I took Monarch/Normal.
    Round 0 - 4000 BC:

Not knowing the map is strange.. Depending on where my scout starts (Haven't looked at the game yet) I want to uncover some tiles to our east, settle in place seems a no brainer. Tech will be BW -> Fishing with Worker -> Workboat. Will definitely pursue the mids with all those forests. I'm thinking about trying the Oracle -> MC -> 'Mids gambit, but we'll see how that plan goes.

    4000 BC - 2100 BC
    Spoiler :
Really don't like the map. The only strategic resource near me is ivory. Here:

The copper is so far away. But I'm settling on the copper/rice/ivory spot (plains hill, if you can see it) as my 3rd city. I've built the Great Wall, for three reasons. 1. Great Spy. 2. No Barbs. 3. I get the feeling I am going to be fighting some defensive wars.

Between chopping and 'cheat whipping' (whipping a warrior and using overflow to fuel Great Wall) I built it in 2100 BC. Not bad, not bad at all. Berlin is a little smaller than it should be, but meh. I haven't declared war on anyone. Yet.

    Timeline -
3685 - Met Mayan guy. Closest neighbor, first to go?
3460 - Got the permanent +2 health event, woo. But I have no floodplains, and my starting area is FLOODED with food resources. :(
    3325 - Met Monty
    3295 - Ghandi
    3175 - Hauyna Capac
2800 - Got a Woodsman II scout! Who died to a bear.
2350 - Met Washington, haven't seen him in a game for ages.
    2230 - Stonehenge built faraway.
    2100 - I build GREAT WALL.

Maya is to my north, Aztec to my northeast, Capac to the far east, and the others are in the fog. I think we're on one big snaky continent. Well, if I off Maya, and either buddy up to Monty or smash him, I'll be in good shape. (By buddy up, I mean backstab, heh).

I'm not specifically gearing toward a SE. I think it's a weak playstyle, and I much prefer cottaging. I'm gonna try to push Fred's Org side and get cheap Courthouses and lots of cities. Bam bam, gonna beeline to Code of Laws now, screw the Oracle.

Oh yeah, build a city near the copper and about 12 axemen, then try and take Maya out. I really do not like neighbors being that close to me.

After I finish, I feel like playing a Settler/Quick match just to see how fast I can win in turns. :p

Wow, okay go go bronze working. I think I am going to try MadScientist's start for the Great Wall and settle a spy or two in Berlin. That worked well in my offline game (which I think is convincing me Warlord is too easy, lol). I think I've learned a lot about city management and specialists, so let's see if it pays off for ol' Ready Freddy.

Edit: Woman is watching "America's Next Top Model". Checkpoint updated.

    Spoiler 1875 B.C. :
Tech path -> BW (hut pop halfway through research) -> Ag -> The Wheel -> Fishing -> Masonry.

Build order -> Worker -> Warrior x2 -> Fishing Boat and then probably Settler.

I'm unsure if I'm going to claim the copper right off. The only other source I see is near Monty. I might go for Iron Working to see if I have sources nearby, and there's a lot of jungle to cut, but I think this game is going to have to be less warry initially than Kublai was. Lot of food, lot of rivers, makes me a happy man, State Property will definately come into play. I think my focus is going to be tech hard and tech fast, let the silly religious nuts fight it out and let the German industrial machine rev up to speed.

After thinking about it a bit, I settle near the nanners, elephants and horses. Pacal has horsies, so I want some as well. The copper is well and buried in my territory, I'm not concerned with someone snaking it. I'm researching IW now and this city should be a decent production city late game when I get workshops and state property going. There is that big river going into Pacal's land, I'd like have me some of that. First I'm going to have to work on opening Hamburg's borders.

The next couple of hundred years plod on. :( I feel like I am not whipping enough at all, 85 turns and no whip?!? Bad, bad, nice Jaa Boo. Freddy needs to show his subjects his fist.

In 1875, where we stop this tale, Iron is discovered, and my instincts pay off - it's in Berlin's fat cross!!! The Great Wall is going to be chopped while I hook that up and then it's Swordsman time. :D

It feels kinda strange playing a game in the "Nobles Club" at Monarch, but what the hey, eh?

I'm gonna take it at my favourite setting - Monarch/Epic.

    Round 0: 4000 BC - 4000 BC

    Spoiler Round 0 :
I usually don't move a Scout "inside" the BFC, but I wanted to know what was south of me beyond the Forests before I made the decision to settle in place. I could see two unforested tiles, which typically means a resource -- either early or hidden ... I needed to know what they were.

I moved the Scout 2S to reveal an unirrigated Rice.

I need Fishing, Agriculture and Bronze Working.

I seriously considered settling 1E to put the Rice in the BFC and to give me more land but decided losing a turn and a forest wasn't worth it.

    My Plan:

    Settle: in place

    Tech: Fishing > BW > Agriculture > ?

Build: Worker (until Fishing) > Work Boat > Work Boat > Worker

Future plans: No clue. I'll have to play through it and wait until the land speaks to me ;)

Good christ, she's still watching it.

    Spoiler 245 BC :
As stated, I started this round after getting Iron Working. I feel I slipped a little and did not use the whip again as well I as should and I made a few bad choices about what to do. But they were small mistakes and I rode them out, getting the Great Wall (and after Berlin's third border pop, nice big wall this time!) and the Oracle for Code of Laws. Berlin started churning out Swordsmen and I quickly attacked Pacal, not wanting to let him expand too much. It was almost too late as he had at least 5 cities (good god man), but the little kid spread himself thin, after only token resistance in his cities. I took his capital and his lake side, and razed two of his cities. The war with Pacal earned me a general, which I am going to save for a MASH unit.

I saved at 245 (thank GOD no more Tyra) and took peace with Pacal for Archery, Sailing and Poly. I'll finish him off later. He's really pissed after I razed the Jewish Holy City. Oh well, it was a crap location, he settled right on top of gold.

Berlin is a incredible early production location. It recovers well from whipping, and I am researching Monarchy so that I can boost that happy cap early. I've already popped my first Great Spy, and I build the Oracle in Hamburg so that I can keep the GP points pure for a bit. Soon, however, I'm going to want to run scientists in Berlin and Hamburg (and probably Pacal's former capital) so I can get the German science machine started.

My next question is, what to do with the Great Prophet that Hamburg will eventually spawn? I could use him for the Confucian shrine in Munich (which is not a very good Wall Street location, it has cows and copper, but limited farmable land until Bio). I'm guessing his next bulb will be for Mono, which would be nice for Organized Religion, but I still want to stay sorta neutral in the holy wars that are already beginning to draw sides off to the east. I've had a lot of requests to stop trading already with Monty, so it looks like the dapper gent is getting off to a swimming start with his neighbors. I may want to keep him around for a while as a distraction once I polish off Pacal. Behind his green wall, Germany will grow lean and svelte, until the Fatherland unleashes its industry upon the world.

Looks like fun. I'm a fan of Fred from vanilla, but I've never used him since his traits have changed. Prince/Epic is where it's going to be at.

    Round 1: 4000 BC - 2000 BC

    Spoiler :
4000 BC: Settled Berlin (in place)
3925 BC: The villagers have provided you with Gold (46 :gold:)
3700 BC: The villagers have provided you with a Scout!
    3675 BC: Montezuma ... fairly far east (13N 19E) ... wonderful
3650 BC: Buddhism has been founded in a distand land. Pacal II met (founder of Buddhism) ... just north (12N 4E) ... I hate this guy
3575 BC: You have discoverd the secrets of Bronze Working. No Copper close enough to speak of.
3375 BC: The villagers have provided you with a Warrior!
3175 BC: The villagers are hostile!
3125 BC: While defending, your Scout was killed by a Barbarion Lion.
2900 BC: While defending, your Scout was killed by a Barbarion Bear.
2675 BC: You have discovered the secrets of Animal Husbandry. (If not for the Cows to the north, I would've skipped AH ... Holkans are so cheezy.)
2475 BC: Judaism has been founded in a distant land.
2375 BC: Our researchers have made a technological breakthrough, rapidly advancing their progress. (+44 :science: towards Iron Working)
2250 BC: Montezuma has completed Stonehenge! (WTF?)
2175 BC: Hamburg founded 1E of Cows.
2100 BC: Pacal II, your head would look good on a pole. (Worker stolen)
2075 BC: You have discovered a source of Iron near Berlin! Now if only I can chop/whip myself a ready-made army.
2000 BC: Pacal II, what is the price for peace? (nothing)

I thought I was doing really well when two of my huts popped for a Scout and a Warrior ... it's too bad the Warrior died 5 turns later. :(

If that wasn't enough, I managed to end one Scout's turn between two Lions and then the other next to a Bear a few turns later.

I'm probably shooting myself in the foot gearing up for war against Pacal, but I really hate him. I've only had him as my immediate neighbour in a few games, and every time he's either expanded into every nook like a family of cockroaches or just flat out not been a nice neighbour.

Besides, he has a holy city (shrineless, but I might be able to fix that later) I think would make a good addition to my empire.

If I had any other neighbour besides Pacal, I'd probably play pretty nice, because there are 4 really good really close food spots I could settle on for quick, easy Scientist pumps. I'll probably still settle them after the war, but it depends on how (or if) that goes.

All things considered, I feel like my start's kinda slow ... IDK yet.

    Hi

Grrr this has been a VERY frustrating game and BIG example of why I should NOT be going up in any diff levels anytime soon.

Report up to 1200 AD or so. I know I KNOW I skipped a few checkpoints BUT I been playing ALL night trying to get out of this tsupid hole I am in and no daylight anytime soon :/

    Spoiler :
Ok game started out so so. Not my best opening but ok. Worst thing was nearest nieghbors are Monty and Pacal :/. NOT the easiest ppl to get along with.

Biggest problem was both Pacal and Monty seemed to far away to do a rush so I conc on workwer techs mostly to build up around my empire. BIG mistake. Pacal spread out FAST I mean he had me penned in until I could BARELY get 3 cities out 2 of which been having culture wars with his cites and another is so overlapped it pretty much usesless. I made one more city way to south of my cap and it is sloowly going but not doing great.

SO while I am pinned in Pacal is spreading out like a plague and Monty is doing even better cuz he is not ONLY settling cities all over the place he is running woughshod over other civs. He took out Gandhi VERY early and owns pretty much half of America. Wang is pinned in so has distinction of being ONLY civ worse off than me.

HC is kinding keeping to himself nobody hates him enough to go after him so he is teching along TRYING to out do monty and pacal but so far isnt better than a solid 3rd place.

Ok it looks bad and in fact I had to stop myself from just giving up several times I am so far behind. But I decided to keep going. I had a plan. My plan was as Pacal was heading FAST into medievl techs while I was still in classical I decided to make a move using TONS of cats, ele's swordsmen and axes.

It worked too I had bout twenty cats mad and 14 swords and 5 eles and a few axes. I DOW on Pacal. I go to first target city and bring down its def and then suicde a TON of cats on his stupid cg longbows but eventually get it down enough that my eles and swords can handle it.

Meanwhile Pacal gets monty to Dow on me grrrr I had spent SOOOO much effort keeping monty at pleased so he wont be on my back and he takes a bribe to go after me. Only thing was he WOULDNT take a bribe to go after Pacal and I had MORE plusses with monty than he had with pacal grrrrr.

But that is really just annoying cuz like I said Monty been off conquering half the far East of map so that is where most of army is so it is gonna be awhile before he can get to us.

Meanwhile my stack heals up and I make a move on next city. Again borders go down and I suicide even MORE cats because THAT city is on a hill with a guerilla II longbow that took FOREVER to take out. But I get it without losing any swords or eles just cats and I raise it since keeping it would mean it would be SWAMPED in culute and I didnt have enough cats to keep going. Plus raising it meant one of my cities that was under culture preasure now can get more elbow room.

Pacal wont give techs for peaec but he gives a big lump sum of gold and gpt so I take it and same turn Monty agrees to peace before any of his army even shows up near my borders.

So I am thinking ok I can see some light MAYBE. just build up tons of cats aagain and try to do it again. Also a great spy pops which I send off to pacal so I can steal techs while I am building up my cats. I get a few techs the big ones being Fuedalism and Guilds. While I get done with machinery fater teching beauacracy before that. So now things are looking even better.

Just that little war got me some breathing room an extra city and dye and horses plus tech wise I am a little bit closer. next time I even have halfway decent shot of getting Pacals cap and if I can that can pretty much put him on terminal downswing while I can move up and get strong enough to take on Monty.

But nooooo. why? Monty DOW's on me JUST as I am getting ready to make new move on Pacal. Now here is what Monty is doing. He is sending in smallish stacks 9 or so at time of Knights Pikes and cats and Trebs. Enter my borders on Hills or forrests. One way thats good since it means no pillaging. BUT Pikes on hills and forrests mean my elles cant take em straight on and what few Maces I managed to make cant handle the Knights straight on. So what does it mean? It means ALL the cats I been spending time and hammers to build back have HAVE to be used first to soften up Montys stacks then my military kills em easy.

But this has TOTALLY shut down my shot at going after Pacal. He is revoering FAST and teching bigtime to gunpowder. Meanwhile Monty is refusing to talk at all. He is losing units by the TONS but its been like 30 truns now and he still wont talk. I think part of it is is because I am losing just as many units if you count all the ctas i need to suicide on his stacks so powerwise I drop even more than him after those battles.

But now I am just spinning my wheels. I make more cats JUST in time to suicide em on lateast stack that monty brings in. And repeat over and over. Meanwhile wveryone else is teching along building wonders and Pcal is recovering and I cant do ANYTHING because stupid monty is making me
waste all my time making cats to stop his stupid stacks grrr.

Meanwhile my tech is Kaput. Washington and wang hate me so they wont help or even do open borders much less jump in against Monty. HC is pleased with me but not pleased enough to take on monty either. and of course Pacal hates me worst of all.

The great spy helped me catch up a lil bit but it didnt help my beakers at all. so I am still teching waaaay too slow but cant do anything. I dont have a cottage or specialist economy. I dont have enough happiness or health to grow my cities past 10 or so and most of that is on mines or porduction so I can TRY and keep building cats to handle Montys raids. WHen they get too big I whip some away but since most of pop then has to stay on mines they grow back slowly.

Plus now that I have used up ALL my ep on Pacal his spies are poisoning cities left and right which would jut be MINORlLY annoying if STUPID monty would just get off my back grrr.

Religon wise I have confusionism in most of my cities BUT I have no state religon just due to fact I was trying to avoid the religious penalty with monty. He is buddhist but NONE of my cities are buddhist so I can even TRY to convert to that and I dont feel all that safe converting to Confusionism since A even ywo turns of anarchy seems it would slow me down too much when I am barely making enough cats to keep monty from going on a pillage fest as it is. And B most evrybody else is Buddhist too so most likelye switching would make it even morel ikely HC could get bribed into dogpiling me and he is ONLY trading partner I have left. NOT he is much help since he wont help against monty wont trade techs wont trade resources and right before I gave up for the night he switched to Mercantilism so now I dont even get trade routes with him grrr.

Pacal Built AP and he is Hindu but almost everybody has at least one hindu city so unless something changes FAST I am thinking Pacal might get AP victory. And here is even really bad thing Pacal is ONLY full AP member but EVERY body has a vote. So was ONLY candidate to be head of ap. Only choices where Pacal or Abstain so I am not sure how that wil work if he calls a AP victory vote. Like if he will be only candidate for that too or not? and would the thingy that prevents you from call ap victory if you can vote yourself applies to AI's as well. If it does then MAYBE he wont get it since he has waaaay more votes than everyone else combined.

But even IF he doesnt get AP win he is still teching fast and rate he is going he is most of way to gunpowder and should have grenadiers and/or curiassors very soon which will pretty much mean I am dead and now I dont even know how fast he is teching since using up all my ep on stealing techs from him means I cant see his research anymore.

I remember reading a post once that said worst thing about Monty is he DOESNT play to win he just plays to try and keep YOU from winning and THAT is what is happening now. Scorewise Monty is in lead and he COULD have shot at domination if he let me and Pacal bump heads while he finishes off George and Wang and then goes after HC , NONE of who have a chance of standing up to him in a war. And ONLY way I would have chance to stop it is IF I could take over Pacal faster then he took over those 3 and got enough land out of deal to block him from domination. Heck even attacking Pacal would be smart move since it would A help cut down Pacals chance at AP win and B get rid of his biggest rival and STILL have him sitting pretty for a dom win since he would most likely get most of Pacals empire but even if we split it 50/50 he would still be 3 times as big as me (and thats assuming Pacal would fight to bitter end and just not vassalize to Monty) and then Monty could easily take or vassalize everyone else and I would be very hard pressed to stop it.

But is he even TRYING any of that? Noooo he is just killing off his army in pieces doing NOTHING but keeping me pinned so Pacal is free to tech and build all he wants.

So best shot right now is Pacal for some kind of victory and thats assuming it hapens before he just decides to wipe me out after he techs into gunpwder. And who knows? even HC with the way he can build might be able to sneak a culture win or something since he is pretty much being left to himself but either way right now I CANT do ANYTHING about it because Monty is making me spin my wheels grrrr

Hi, very much a real newbie here. Have only finished two games on Noble and one on Prince (which i got rex'ed out in the end and lost).

Usually running a cottage econ as it seemed more easier to me, but i want to give the specialist one a go. Therefore im gonna try this one on Noble/Epic/Choose Religions (pity about the standard map though it will take getting used to...)

Anyway Reserving this post to edit chechpoints into. Just to say, i'd love some constructive crtiscism in the end! :goodjob:

I've decided to take my time with this game after the last one! I feel like I rushed that one abit. :mischief:

S.ilver, nice to see you here, I wondered whether you might come over to play a game or two.

Nice to see you here, maybe I can pick up some more tips.

So all I need you to do is write a detailed turn by turn report of exactly what you did in the first 63 turns of you game and I'll be okay, only kidding! ;)

King Billy, Welcome to Nobles Club :) don't forget to ask for advice if you feel you need it, there are some pretty good players in this club who are always willing to help!

Hm, could use some help in this game.

    First Phase:

    4000 BC - 350 BC

    Spoiler :
I build Berlin right were I stood and started with the techs:

    BW->Fishing (Found half way through)->Agr->AH->Arch->IW

    Build order:

    Worker->Warrior (tlll Fishing came along)->Workboat->Workboat->Warrior->Worker->Warrior->Settler->Setller

I founded München/Munich down South as a second production city.

Met Pascal, Monty, Ghandi, Capac (great combination, really)

Founded Hamburg up north as a commerce city.

Found Iron just south of Berlin and started to build up an army of swordsmen and axemen, because Pascal was crowding me from the north. Just about to start the war with him.

    Second Phase:

    350 BC - 250 AD

    Spoiler :
I captured and burned Pascal's city ne of Hamburg. I don't know why but I got some guerrilla axemen out of that. I lost some units to them and the attack lost a lot of momentum.

Nontheless I was able to take his capital Tikal, waited to rounds till the alphabet was finished and offered peace for two of his techs.

I used the time to gegroup and build more units and I'm now about to attack Lakamba.

Monty's not really happy with me because I keep attacking his friends. Can't do much about that.

    North:

Pascal pushes settlers out like crazy. He already settled where I destroyed his one city before.

I'm kind of stuck here and not sure how to proceed.

    Spoiler :

I was able to take Lakamba and his next city to the south Mayapan. I had to offer peace after that because I still had no catapults and the 40% advantage for the defenders was taking a too heavy toll.
Was able to get another tech for that.

I discovered construction and started building catapults to finish Pascal off.

Stupidly I didn't notice that Monty took Pascal as his vassal. So I declared war not only to Pascal but to Monty as well.

I was able to take Pascals city and burn it. Thereby getting another horde of guerillas who killed some of my already wounded units. Monty's first units are arriving now and I don't really know how to go from here. Probably should have played different from the start.
